Dear Bonnie,
It is good to hear from you. I wonder how you do all you do. You are
a lady of vast energy.
Thank you for setting me straight on the Allens Cato's. I knew that
there were 2 Allens but failed to notice that Allen in Leake Co., Ms.
was there with some Grahams, a tip off that he was William's son. I
had William in Ala. and I guess I assumed all of his children had
remained there or had gone to Texas. I had not looked at Mrs. Fair's
book for a while.
Miles Gardner and Joan Raney have given me some data on Needham's
family that seems to be supported by the census data. I think the
1810 census has to be ignored. From the 1820 census, it is obvious
that a number of children were not recorded in 1810. It should have
read something like this: 33010-21010. So I am using 1800, 1820, 1830
census records. It appears at the moment that his family is as
follows:
Children, ages come from the 1850 census:
Dau, b. 1794-00, ca 1794
Son, b. 1794-00, NATHAN CATO, b. 1796, m. with daughter under 10 yrs.
in 1820.
Son, b. 1794-00, JOHN CATO, b. ca 1798, m. before 1820 to M. Deason
Children from Miles Gardner:
WILLIAM CATO, b. 1820, m. Martha ? .
Daughter, b. ca 1831
Son, b. 1800-04, SAMUEL L. CATO, b. ca 1800, moved to Hall Co., Ga.,
b. 1799 according to 1850 census
Dau. b. 1800-04, probably ELIZABETH CATO, b. ca 1802
Son, b. 1804-10, GREEN CATO, b. 1805, m. between 1830-40 to Elizabeth
?
Son, b.1804-10, BURRELL CATO, b. 1807, m. between 1840-50 to Martha
?
Son, b. 1810, WILLIAM R. CATO, b. 1810, m. between 1820-30 to
Elizabeth ?
Dau, b. 1810-15 (1800-10 in one census) MARY CATO, b. 1810
Dau, b. 1810-15, MAHALA CATO, b. ca 1814
Dau, b. 1815-20
Son, b. 1820-25, NEEDHAM CATO JR., b. ca 1820, d. 1852
So Allen is apparently not a son of Needham. At this point I guess I
will have to again consider him a son of Henry and Tabitha. Since
William named son Allen, and Burwell (Burrell) had a grandson named
Allen, it would appear Allen is family name, probably not from the
Cato line however. Have you seen the name in the Brewer line?
Presently I have the following as children of Henry and Tabitha, plus
possibly other daughters.
STERLING CATO , b. ca 1756 in Brunswick Co., Va., died after 1814,
either in Christian Co., Ky. or Wayne Co., Mo.
JOHN CATO, b. ca 175?, m. ? , died 1810 in Lancaster Co., SC.,
had no children in the 1790 census.
BURWELL CATO, b. ca 1764 on Drowning Ck., d. 9/19/ 1848 in Jefferson
Co., Ms. His wife was Frances.
WILLIAM CATO, 1/25/1765 on ? Drowning Ck. d. after 1842 in Monroe Co.,
Ala., m. Sarah Massey
NEEDHAM CATO, b. ca 1768, d. in Kershaw Co., SC in 1832, m. Elizabeth
? .
VINSON CATOE, b. probably born 1765-74, ca 1772, d. 1822 in
Lancaster Co., S.C., m. Sophia ?
? ALLEN CATO, b. probably 1775-80, ca 1776, was in the 1820 census
of Wayne Co., Ms. along with Burwell Cato.
? NATHAN CATO, b. 1775-84 (ca 1778), is in the 1810 and 1820 censuses
of Abbeyville Co., S.C.
? JAMES CATO , b. 1780-90 (ca 1782), was in the 1820 and 1830
censuses of Jefferson Co., Ms. with Burwell Cato
DAUGHTER. b. 1774-84, in the 1790 and 1800 censuses.
DAUGHTER. b. 1774-84, in the 1790 and 1800 censuses.
HENRY CATO, b. 1786 (according to 1850 census), in Christian Co., Ky.
and Wayne Co., Mo.
BETSY CATO, b. 1784-90, m. David Johnson 8/8/1809 in Christian Co.
Ky., could be a daughter of Sterling
TABITHA CATO, b. 1790-00, m. Francis B. Ladd , could be a daughter of
Sterling.
I want to thank you for your kind words. As for my wife, she is the
sweet person your daughter described her as. She does lack an
interest in the "dead", focusing on the living, a thing she is most
good at and leaves me to do my thing. We do have a lot in common
however and just got back from a 12 day trip to Natchez, Vicksburg,
Mobile and Ponte Vedra, Fla.
I think that I can look into the Washington Co., Ala. records if you
have not already done so; that is, what ever is available in the FHC.
Let me know.
I am sorry to hear that you have the diabetis. I am sure that getting
adjusted to the diet is a chore at first but it will be easier as
time goes on and will come to be second nature to you in time.
Henry
