Bonnie,
I will begin to respond to your lineages. For the most part I agree
and have made some changes in my lineages to match yours where I find
you more likely correct. However there are a few places that we
disagree at this moment and some things that I lack information on to
agree.
You have following Vincent Cato's family in your list, as brothers to
William Cato that m. Sarah Massey; ?Allen, d. Ms. 1836 and ?James
Cato (1760-70). Is this Allen the Allen in the 1820 census of Wayne
Co., Ms.? He was born 1775-94 and seems to come along with Burwell. I
am surprised to see him classified as a brother although I cannot
place him presently. How did you connect him to William? The James
Cato (1760- 70). Is he the James Cato that went to Washington Co.,
Ala with Blount, Lewis and Sterling? He would seem to belong to that
branch.
I am inclined to think that Sterling had a son Sterling. It had been
my idea that the the Sterling and Green that were on the Spy missions
in the 1790's and went on to the Mississippi Territory were brothers
(not father and son) and were sons of Sterling, the grandson of Henry
Cook. I am not sure which Sterling married Abigail Brewer. I have the
second Sterling as the father of Wyche and Lewis and possibly Blount
and James.
It appears that you have 2 William Catos as son of John and Jane Cato.
One is William of Washington Co., Ga. who you say might be the
father of Blount, James and an Allen. I have thought that that
William was the Rev. War Soldier that was born in Halifax. Co., NC.
The second William you have as a son of John and Jane Cato is William
of Fairfield Co. SC. You have him born in 1757 (would be after Jane
died). However he was over 45 yrs. in the 1800 census. Incidently
Cynthia has found that William of Fairfield, Henry and Sterling all
bought land on the Tar Coat of Black River in 1785. This suggests
that this William is part of Henry's family (brother or son) although
the names in William's family are quite different from the rest of
the family.
You have George Cato, son of John and Elizabeth Cato who inherited
from the 1788 will, as born ca 1740 and lived in Northhampton Co., NC
and as being the George Cato (Sr.) in Sumter Co., SC with children:
George Jr., Obed, William, John, Burwell and Daniel. However I
believe you have 2 different men mixed together.
If George was a son of John and Elizabeth Nannie Cato, he would have
been born after 1753. It would appear that the John and George Cato
in Northhampton Co., NC who acquired land in 1772 and sold their land
and moved out in 1778 were sons of William Cato who acquired land in
Northhampton Co., NC in 1749 and who also sold his land in 1778. It
would appear that they may have moved to Martin and Pitt Co., NC.
They were probably born in the 1740's. It appears that the George
Cato that was briefly in Northampton Co., NC about 1799 when he sold
his inheritance to William Tomlinson was the son of John and
Elizabeth Cato. Now which George was in Sumter Co., SC.? Since George
was in Sumter by 1786 when he acquired land, he must be George son of
William (since George son of John was still in Greensville and
Northhampton Counties as later a s1799). However for this to be so,
then the census record of 1800 must be wrong since it shows George of
Sumter Co. as born 1755-74. He would not have been old enough to buy
land in 1772. This age would fit George son of John and Elizabeth.
You have George as born ca 1740 (way off from the census record). The
1800 census record also has the sons of George as born 1774-84 (1),
1784-90 (1), 1790-00 (1). You estimate William as b. ca 1760's, and
George Jr. as born 1765-70. The census record of 1810 has George Jr.,
Obed and William born 1764-84. The 1830 census has a George Cato in
Lancaster Co., born 1760-70. I am inclined to think that the 1800
census record is wrong for George and his sons. I think that George
was born before 1755, perhaps in the 1740's, and that he is the son
of William of Northhampton Co., NC. If this so, where did George son
of John go, also the son John?
Well this seems to cover what discussion I have at the moment.
