The .tiff file you had problems with had this...
Survey Rep. No. 8780 p3
Muster for November-December 1767
Virginia Men Who Left or Joined
2p John Cato
(Thanks to Sharon Cato for this!!)
Next question... does anyone have any ideas about WHO this is or WHAT
this is????
He was listed under the Admiralty's muster rolls in 1767, apparently on
the Squirrel (ship) manifest? -- 1766, SR 08780, p. 1 (the number for
the ship Squirrel matches the SR #.)
The only 2 John Catos that I know of (so far) who would have been an
adult in 1767 is John who m. Jane or the John who was the father of the
John & George in Norfolk... - the latter ch. of John b. 1769-75 & that
John (their father) is assumed dead by 1775. Does anyone have an
explaination for the above "Virginia Men Who Left or Joined"?
Could the above John have been a Loyalist??? I know the Stamp Act was
passed in 1765 & Loyalist were tarred & feathered & run out of town in
many cases. Others chose to leave & tempers supposedly ran high on the
issues for quite a few years afterwards - duh!! Wasn't "the Admiralty"
still English at this point???
On the other hand, could he have left the service & is that what it
means? What does the 2p mean???
As a side note, there's also a John Cater in 1695 who was a 2nd Liet. on
the ship, Truelove & at least 2 ships named Cato around in the
mid-1700s, the Cato & the Snow Cato.
Cynthia, I have my Virginia request!!! What can you find out about
this??? The record is in the VA State Library.
