Cynthia,
I've come to the same conclusion on Wm. - the John there was his father,
not grandfather. I'm having a little problem with who this Wm. was,
however (see bottom!). I think Mrs. Fair might have thrown us all off
track on several things!!!
I also spent a lot of time with old maps yesterday, along with deed
abstracts from NC & believe that the person who wrote the book was
confused about where Drowning Creek was. I also tracked where his
service was quoted as being & it doesn't make sense unless the Drowning
Creek was on the other side of NC. I can guarantee you that there are
no other Drowning Creeks that were on any old maps that they have on
file at A & M. I'm grateful you posted that info, though! I now have
found some great old maps up here that I didn't know we had in the Rare
Maps Dept. of A & M! We also didn't have the Ark. Fam. Historian you
wanted, so I'm glad someone else was able to find it!
Does anyone know anything about this? It was sent to me way back:
"William Cato (From Rev. War Pension & Bounty Land Warrent Application
Files on microfilm at the Birmingham Library in AL)
Warrent #11042 & #14046, issued May 30, 1793 to John Cato, Adm. of
William Cato, PRIVATE FROM MARYLAND.
William Cato (d. 1829), wife Susan (d.9/14/1842). A private from
Maryland. Warrents issued 5/30/1793 to John Cato, adm. (detailed info
in V.2 to 4 of Land Warrents issued prior to 1800). Claim filed by dau.
Francis W. Harrison."
Does anyone live in Birmingham or have access to the ORIGINALS on
this??? Something looks a little messed up in the above!
I'm also showing in MD Henry Cater - Queen Anne's Co., Kent Island
Township, 1763. (????MAYBE the one who married into Wyche family?????)
Also, the Christopher on the early SC census seems to fit in with the
Christian in MD. Does anyone have any further info on him? (This
family seems to feed into the Sumpter Co. branch in SC - all look like
Christopher/George's children - using the census, that is!)
Also, in MD
1776 (age of person listed is 1st, followed by ages of other males in
household)
William Cato - Prince George Co., 35, 23, 12, 9, 2 (Wm.b.1741)
(From notes br Earl F. Cater Pastor on Baugo Church of the
Bretheren. (Haven't verified yet!!)
"John Cater b.1776 d. Sep 18, 1858 age 81 yrs, 6 months, 26 days
took tract of 160 acres in 1806 land grant in Belmont County, OH
(still in the Cater family name){1980}, Settled with brother
George and family and father, William. Wife Mary Tarman 1-23-1805
Prince George County, MD. Known Children.")
Christian Cato - Prince George Co., 30, 14, 7, 15, 4 (bro.to Wm.?)
Other MD notes:
George Catto is also listed MD as being b. 1753 on pension
application.
Another George is an adult in MD at this time (1750s).
John Cater is shown m. to Anne Sporgen in 1724 in MD.
Robert Cato in 1741 is mortgaging land in MD.
1790 MD shows (sons of one of above?):

----------
Some general conclusions I've drawn on various Williams:
Wm. in Northampton b. before 1741.
Wm. in Northampton is NOT William in 1790 Halifax - b. too late
Wm. in Northampton is NOT William in Fairfield Co., SC - b. too late.
(this Wm. also had land in Fairfield in 1780, bef. he got land in
1785 in Lancaster area).
Wm. in MD MIGHT be William in Northampton - Wm. in MD b. ca 1741. I
don't FEEL this is correct, but it might end up being so.
Wm. in Northampton of the correct age range to be son of John m. Jane
or even possible brother. I FEEL like he was prob. son, but have
been wrong before in my 'hunches'!
-------------
Wm. of Chesterfield we know is son of John since he gets land from
John - Burrell signs - 1816. QUESTION - was this John & Henry who
were there brothers??? Who was this John??? For lack of any other
explaination at this point, I'm going to put him (John) as Henry's
brother, but with question mark, unless someone knows something
more! (Translation: Wm's father: John Jr., son of John m. Jane)
Wm. of Chesterfield is *NOT* Wm. m. Sarah Massey, IF census & Bible
records are correct. (Census in Chesterfield doesn't match Bible)
Wm. of Chesterfield *appears* to be related to Wm. m. Lucy Ivey in
Mont. Co., *GA* (not Mont. Co., AL) - possible father. Still
checking here!
Wm. of Chesterfield does NOT appear to be William in Wilkes Co., GA.
Please give feedback!!!
