I am forwarding the following for Henry because he meant for it to go to
the list:
Bonnie,
I am being the Devil's advocate. You seem to be inferring that the
Cullen in the records of Martin Co. NC in 1792 was the Cullen of
Hancock Co., Ga. You also suggest that Cullen was the male 26-46 in
Francis and Alsey Cato's home in the 1820 census and that he was the
one who fought in the War of 1812. The man 26-45 yrs. would have been
born 1775-1794 and would not have been old enough to be witnessing a
will in 1792. That man would have had to have been born before 1772.
This would be a little old to be fighting in the War of 1812. It
would seem that maybe there were two Cullen Cato's. The Cullen Cato
witnessing the will was in Martin Co. and the Hancock Co. Cullen. The
Martin Co. Cullen could have been either a son of John, son of George
or Stephen Jr. I suspect that the Hancock Co. Ga. Cullen was the
soldier in the War of 1812.
Who else was in Martin Co.? George Catoe entered for 250 acres
bordering his own land in 1778. John, ?son of George was in Pitt Co.
in 1764 (adjoins Martin). Francis, son of Stephen, has been found
only in Bertie. Stephen Jr. was in Bertie Co as late as 1771. I find
his name in the deed index of Pitt Co. as a grantee in 1773, 1783 and
1784. He is in the 1790 census of Edgecomb Co., NC as 22400. Also
there is a William Cato (likely Stephen Jr's son) who is 124 in the
1790 Edgecomb census and in 1800 is 00010-01100. Edgecomb, Martin and
Pitt border each other and Martin separates Bertie from Pitt and
Edgecomb. So I agree that Francis and Cullen of Washington and
Hancock Co., Ga. belong in this family but the problem is to
determine how. As I say we also have to also consider the William of
Washington Co., Ga who was Rev. War soldier. Francis and Cullen of Ga.
could have been either a son of Stephen Jr. or William, born in
Halifax Co. or Dist, NC who fought in the Rev. in Ga.
It would help to know when William went to Ga. and where Francis and
Cullen were born. There was a William in Telfair Co., Ga. who was b.
1789 in NC, who I would think was a grandson of Stephen, maybe
through the son William. However my record of his census in 1800 does
not show a son at home so he might be son of Stephen born late in
Stephen's life. Where he was in 1800 is not known but he might be
living with a brother somewhere since I have not found Stephen in
1800. Is there any record of Stephen in Ga.?
