Aaarrrgghhh! So, so sorry... 1 more time from a different computer:
NC Francis Cater - Court 9/9/1742, those who proved their rights to
witness: Stephen Cater, Sarah Cater, Winnefrett Cater, George Cater,
Syrack Cater, **Francis Cater, Stephen Jr. (white persons), Bertie Co.
[Stephen Sr. d. between 1744-45]
NC - Martin Co. - We know George was there, along with *only* son,
John. Also found there is **Francis. **Cullen is also there in 1792
when he witnesses a will. (So b. bef. 1772) Because no one else is
mentioned in the Co., I'm going to assume Cullen to be Francis's son or
brother - probably a brother. (Cullen later fights in War of 1812 in KY
& LA)
~~~~ The info that Gloria sent shows that in 1810, Francis AND CULLEN
Cato were buyers from the Benj. Bryant estate in Hancock Co., GA. ~~~~
In 1820 Wash. Co., GA census you find Francis 45+ with another m 26-45
who I believe is Cullen. We know that Alsey is 26-45 here & is
Francis's wife as shown in his estate settlement.
The children I'm showing for Francis (b. bef. 1775) & Alsey (b. ca 1777)
household are:
m 1794/1804 (not on 1830 or after Wash. Co. census so left county)
m 1794/1804 (not on 1830 or after Wash. Co. census so left county)
Sarah Cato ca 1805
James Cato ca 1807 (James's dau. Emily m. Luander May)
f 1805-1810
f 1810-1820 (Penelope m. Jos. MOTT)
f 1810-1820
If this is the Francis in early NC, he would have been b. bef. 1742 &
died 1829 at about 90 years old or better. He & Alsey would have been m
ca 1800 if these are the only children. I can't picture a ca 23 year old
marrying a 60+ year old man & having children until he's into his 80s or
90s so I'm going to assume the Francis m to Alsey was a nephew (or son)
of the older Frances (Sr.) & hence a grandson probably to Stephen Sr.
Out of Stephen Sr.'s known sons, George only had 1 son (John), so
Francis (Jr.) wasn't his. We know Syrack d without children. That
leaves Stephen & Francis as possible fathers & frankly I think it was
Stephen because we haven't found any records of Francis after the 1757
tax roll (until the Francis shows up in Martin Co. with Cullen who I
think is his brother because of the ages shown on the later census in GA
where they're also together). In Martin Co., NC, there was also a will
in 1787 which mentions a Penelope Cato, dau. of Mary Cake's sister. I
think the Penelope listed above as a child of Francis (Jr.) & Alsey was
named for this relative. [Since Cullen was apparently running around
fighting wars when one or more of the children were born & there's no
other female listed to be his wife, I'm assuming at this point that the
children belong to Francis & Alsey & not to him.]
It appears that all the Cato family in Washington Co., GA belonged to
Francis & Alsey - either as children or grandchildren & all remaining
until 1850 & named Cato were Jame's. My question is, was Susanna m. in
Washington Co.?? I don't have a county listed on the marriage.
Later!
Bonnie
(with fingers crossed that this goes through this time)
