Colonial Counties
South Carolina abt. 1720 was taken from the Lords Proprietors and made a
Royal Province. Four counties were laid out. All fur counties reached
frm the Atlantic Ocean to NC.
Granville Co...along east bank of Savannah Rv.
Colleton Co...along east side of Granville
Berkely Co...along east side of Colleton and
up to Santee,Congaree & Broad Rv.
Craven Co...above and bordered on Santee
& Broad Rivers.
In between 1750-1770 much of the Berkeley and Craven landline above
Columbia was not kown exactly and many settlers had lands in that area(
Union,Spartanburg,Laurens & Newberry) when it was actually in Berkely.
Charleston was the county seat for all four Colonial Counties. All
dees, estates, wills and other legal papers had to be taken to Charleston
for recording. Up to 1782/85 all papers are in Charleston.....However
during the War of Revolution, Charleston was held by the British and
people often waited until the war was over and had papers from 1775 to
1783 recorded later in the new counties, formed in 1785 ...Also from
1775 to 1783 papers were recorded in districts, that were missing or
lost.
