Bonnie,
I cannot agree with you when you say that the George who died in
Wayne Co. was a George Jr.
First thing are you saying that he was divorced? It appears to me
that Mary Poole was a widow in 1752 when she wrote her will. George
of Wayne Co., NC did not die until 1794. I think he was the George
Cater who was in Bertie Co., NC in 1742 and who was qualified to
testify along with Stephen, Stephen Jr., Syrack, Francis, Sarah and
Winnifred Cater. I think he was married to Martha and after he died
in 1794, Martha married Ozeas Beaman. Ozeas and Martha sold 255 acres
of the land she inherited from George in 1796. I have thought that it
was her marrige to Ozeas that was the cause of her being disowned by
the Quaker church. When did this occur?
I can agree that it is possible that Stephen is not a son of George
Catour but I think that George of Wayne Co., NC was a son of Stephen.
You point out that he was living near Peter Lee and that George was
likely her uncle. But Syrack Cato also lived near by in Johnson Co.
and it was in Johnson Co. that that Henry Cato and Peter Lee were in
1769. If Stephen was a son of George Catour, then George was a first
cousin of Henry and Mary Lee.I do not think we can say what was the
name of the husband of Mary Poole. He very possibly was named George
but I think he died before Mary Poole wrote her will.
I can also say that we have no proof that George Catour of Isle of
Wight and Brunswick Co. was a son of John Cato of Nansemond Co.
However Mrs. Ida Lankford wrote "the line as indicated seems the
direct line because of dates, places of residences, and names of
families and friends in wills, such as; Peterson, Mosely, Cooke,
Lanier and Batte". We know that these are connected with the families
of John and Daniel Cato of Brunswick Co. Do we have evidence of their
connection with Cato's in the 1600's and if so, with whom.?
You are suggesting that George was a descendant of the George Cato
who came to Va. in 1642 and that there was an intervening George. I
have not seen any records of this, nor of any record on a George Cato
between the 1642 entry and the purchase of land in Isle of Wight in
1731 by George. Please post all that you have on them.
