Desire information on Mary A. Cater, my great-great grandmother. Born 1821
in SC. Married Conecuh County, AL, William Henry Burnett (1823-1874).
Moved to Harrison County, TX, where she died in 1884.
She is most probably a daughter of Edwin Cater. She is definitely a member
of the same family. Edwin Cater was born c1800 in SC. In 1820, he was
married, wife unknown, and living in Sumter County, SC. He married again in
1834 to Clarissa H. Tarleton. He disappears from records until the 1840s
when he was made a judge of Panola County, TX (not the present county, but a
previous and temporary one). He was a notary public and assistant clerk of
court in Harrison County, Texas, residing first in Elysian Fields and then
Marshall, TX. He was living as late as 1859, but his wife appears alone in
the 1860 census. His known children, other than Mary, are as follows:
1. Edwin Lawrence Cater (1825, AL-1874). Generally appears only as
Lawrence. Lived in Conecuh County, AL, and Santa Rosa, FL.
2. Samuel W. Cater, born c1828, AL. He owned a hotel in Pensacola, FL, at
one time.
3. Thomas P. Cater (1835, AL-1862, NM). Was listed in households of his
father and of Mary A. Burnett in 1850. Living in Sante Fe, NM, in 1860. He
died in the Civil War in New Mexico.
4. Martha Cater (1837-1852)
5. Catherine J. ("Kate") Cater (c1842, AL-?). Married and lived in Santa
Rosa, FL, and Montgomery, AL
6. Marion W. Cater (1848-1890) married and lived in Marshall, TX.
From letters and diaries, Edwin Cater had the following brothers and
sisters:
1. William Green Cater, born c1815, SC. Lived in Conecuh County, AL,
Elysian Fields, TX, DeSoto Parish, LA.
2. Eliza Cater born c1803, SC. Married a McPherson. A widow living in
Conecuh County, AL, in 1850 and 1860.
3. Leah Cater. Married William Adams of Sumter County, SC. She had
children: Edwin Bryant (or Briant) Adams (1817-1890), William Adams, and
Catherine Adams. Children lived SC, AL, TX.
Can anyone supply information on this family. I believe Edwin is probably
the son of a William and Catherine Cater of Sumter County, SC, and possibly
grandson of George Cater of same.
