We finally tracked down the reference to William Cato, private of the Maryland line,
listed as having a "Claim Barred by the Statute of Limitations" , and it shows
some interesting info re: William's service:
NARA. Record Group 217. M-235: Misc Treasury Accnts of the First Auditor of the Treasury
Dept, 1790-1840. Roll #9.
Revolutionary Claims Adjusted and Allowed at the Treasury Dept., for which certificates of
registered debt issued, in Virtue of a Law entitled "An Act Providing for the
Settlement of Claims of Persons Under Particular Circumstances Barred By Limitations
Heretofore Established" Passed on the 27th of March, 1792.

"It appears by the Muster Rolls on file in this Office that the above named William
Cato
enlisted the 1st October 1777 for the War,
promoted to Sergeant the 1st of January 1780,
reduced to a Private the 15th of September following,
and died supposed of his wounds on June 18th, 1781.
John White Esqur late aforesaid Commissioner of Army Account has made up his pay from the
1st of August 1780 to the day of his Death. "
This is the same William Cato whose administrator John Cato received his Bounty Land (100
acres in Ohio)
Bounty Land Warrant Record Card
Cato, William. Private. Maryland line
Warrant # 11042 and 14046
issued May 30, 1793 to John Cato, administrator. 100 acres.
This land was sold by William's administrator, John Cato. The 100 acres was
registered 1800 Feb 11 by Waddington and Harwood for Galbreath and Eames (along with a
long list of other bounty land warrants which Galbreath and Eames had apparently
acquired). So John Cato sold the land before Feb 11, 1800.
So where did this John Cato end up? I wonder where John Cato was living when he sold this
land. There is that George CATO in Charles County, Maryland at this time, but I do not
find a John Cato in 1790 or 1800. Could this John Cato be the one in Lancaster County,
South Carolina?
Any comments appreciated.
Best,
Cynthia
