Bonnie,
Today I rechecked the Sumter Co., S.C. censuses of 1800 and 1810 for
George Cato Sr. and Jr. since there seemed to be possibly some
mistakes for these gentlemen in these censuses on the Cato home page.
I found that the census for George Cato in the 1800 census is clearly
1110-30010. Gloria's reading of George as being over 45 is wrong.
There is a note that he is listed 2x. I was unable to find but one
listing. If there is another listing then it many contain the record
as Gloria read it. However I searched the record repeatedly for a
second recording and could not find it.
The 1810 census is reported as having George Sr. and Jr. in the index
but only George Jr. was found. It is my opinion that the Gideon Cato
was wrongly read and that he is George Cato Sr. It is written GeoSenr.
and is hard to read. He is 00101-20011. Other sons who had their own
household in 1810 were William, Oved, George Jr., John and Burrell.
That must be Daniel who is still at home in 1810. According to
George's will he had 4 daughters: namely; Sarah, Frances, Ann, and
Elizabeth. However the census records point toward 5 daughters.
Either he had a daughter who had died without issue by 1806 or the
records were mismarked.
