I was delighted to discover the CATO page and to learn that I am far from
alone in my Cato search.
My great-grandmother was Deby Jane Cato Taylor, born in Dubois County,
Indiana 10 February 1858; married to Samuel Cleveland Taylor in Dubois
County, 14 December 1880; died in Dubois County, 21 May 1902. She is
buried in the Main Cemetery, just outside of Huntingburg, Indiana.
She was the mother of nine children. I have their dates and spouses for
anyone who might be interested.
Deby Jane's parents were William Cato, born in Dubois County, Indiana 19
April 1828; married to Elizabeth Taylor 7 October 1846; died in Dubois
County, 23 January 1901. Elizabeth died 29 November 1867. He and Elizabeth
are also buried in
the Main Cemetery. There were eight children of this marriage. William
re-married after Elizabeth's death. The second wife was Mary Jane
Williams with whom he had five more children.
William Cato's parents were Green Talbart Cato and his second wife, Rhoda
Alley. Green was born 23 March 1790, place unknown but probably
Virginia. Rhoda was probably born in North Carolina, 1 June 1808. They
were married in Sumner County, Tennessee 1 July 1827. They left Tennessee
and were settled in Dubois County, Indiana by March 1828. They were the
parents of fourteen children, several of whom fought for the Union in the
Civil War. For Green this was a second marriage, and he brought two
children from his first marriage to Sarah Drake with him to Indiana.
Both Green and Rhoda Cato are buried in Spurgeon, Indiana (Pike County),
Blackfoot Cemetery.
After this I have family stories because I have yet to connect Green to
the man I believe was his father, Robert Cato. I know that Robert and his
brother Roland were both in the War of 1812 in Tennessee and I have the
name of Polly Clark, and later in his will, the name Mary, as his wife.
Through my own research at the Family History Center, I have connected
Robert to parents in Virginia, Roland Cato and Polly Powell. I know that
Polly's parents were Thomas Powell and Sarah (unknown surname). Roland
descends from Daniel Cato and Patience Harris; Daniel through John Cato
and Jane Cooke, and then John from George Cato whom I think might be the
immigrant ancestor. I don't know.
If anyone is interested in this family, sharing questions and
information, please write!
