Linda, I am not a Cato, but in the course of some other research, I found a bounty land
application file (at the National Archives) for Burrel Cato who served in General
Marion's SC Militia in 1780. In 1850 and 1855, laws were passed by Congress that
allowed larger amounts of bounty land to veterans. Any who were still living could claim
the additional benefits, but the widow or heirs could also claim it if the soldier was
dead. Burrell was dead by 27 Dec 1858, but his sons, Lewis and Sterling, tried to claim
their father's bounty land, saying that their mother, Frances, was also dead. Lewis
and Sterling made their affidavit in Jefferson County, Mississippi.
Good luck with your DAR application.
