Hi Cousins ,
Have run across a few interesting things lately....
In the Catawba-Wateree Chapter, SC Genealogical Society newsletter (Messenger) Vol 9 No.
3. March 1996.
Deed. 11 Feb 1775/76. John Martain STROBER of Craven SC and SARAH his wife--to Benjamin
Hall of same--- for L130? -- 25 acres Parish of St. Marks, Craven County SC-- both sides
of Flat Creek, a branch of Lynches Creek--bounded by Robert Harper. Surveyed Oct 5, 1758
for John BAKER. Witness: Jonas Guffin. Before Wm Welch, JP. Book C&E 52 recorded
20 April 1790. (NOTE: John BAKER plat 1758 exists for 150 acres in Craven - adj Robert
Harper. Grant dated 1762. Memorial dated 1762. )
Deed. 17 Dec 1788. John STOVER purchased from WILLIAM JOHNSTON and JEAN his wife of
Lancaster County SC-- for 4000lbs tobacco-- 100 acres on Bever Creek in Lancaster County,
"where sd John STOVER now lives"-- Wits: Thomas Bradford and Samuel B.
Bradford. (NOTE: article states that John STROBER/STOVER married Mary Bradford, daughter
of Thomas Bradford, and these witnesses are likely her brothers... also that John STOVER
died 1788-1790 and the "widow Stober/Stover" is found on Lancaster County SC
census, 1790 and 1800).
From the SCDAH online database:
WILLIAM JOHNSON. Plat. 15 April 1768. (and grant, 15 May 1768). 100 acres--Craven
County, small branch of the Little River. (NOTE: because this grant is for 100 acres,
it may be that this William Johnson is unmarried with no children .... in SC at this time,
he would have been entitled to 100 acres as head of house, plus 50 acres each for wife,
child, indentured servant, or slave.)
EDWARD KENNINGTON. Plat. 3 Feb 1787. 370 acres on Flat Creek, Camden District.
Adjoining landowners indxed are John BAKER, Wm DEASON, DAVID JOHNSON, BENJAMIN LADD,
William NARRAMORE, Henry PEEBLES. Places mentioned: Flat Creek, Lick Creek, Lynches
Creek.
From Lancaster County SC Deeds:
4 Nov 1805. Edward Kennington of Lick Run of Lancaster sells DAVID JOHNSTON
"formerly of Flat Creek", 2 acres for 10 shillings sterling...where JOHN BAKER
now lives. Wit: Ed. Terrell, John Baker. Deed Book F p 251. (NOTE: I don't know
if this David Johnston is still in SC, or not? Also, several deeds mention these same
names in association: Kennington/Cannington; Thos Frizzel; Baker; Narramore; Peebles;
Ladd; and Cato. I think most of these deeds have been posted to the list already, so I
won't duplicate)
From Anson County NC Deeds, Book H, p 121-123-- abstract found online
at Anson_Chesterfield_Chronicles (Kendrick family database):
11 Dec 1784: Slaves Bill of Sale. Recorded October 1805. Original dated 14 Oct 1782,
when William JOHNSON of Anson County "have this day sold and set over unto Joseph Jno
Wade one Negro girl of a yellow complexion named PAT" for L50. The same day, 14 Oct
1782, WILLIAM JOHNSON made oath in Anson County that while he had a good title to the
slave girl PAT, the previous May he had left her to assist ON HIS FATHER'S SOUTH
CAROLINA PLANTATION from which she was "plundered". This deposition was given
to Thomas Wade JP in 1784 but was not recorded until October of 1805. On 12 October
1784, Joseph John Wade endorsed (ie assigned) the Bill of Sale to Andrew Tucker, who then
endorsed it to Benjamin Thurman. Witness Wm Wood proved the transactions in Anson County
NC on 26 Nov 1784. Two weeks later 11 Dec 1784 Benjamin Thurman endorsed the Bill of Sale
to Capt Wm. Hendrick.
>>>> John H, if you are reading this
>>>>>> I am pretty sure that this William JOHNSON is the same one who
died with the 1804 Will in Anson County... that 1804 Wm Johnson will was witnessed by
Peter USSERY, Robert RUSHING and Paul RUSHING, according to an abstract in my file. The
record above was found in a large and detailed Kendrick family database, which shows that
the Kendricks are also involved with the Rushings and etc. This Wm Johnson of Anson
County's wife Sarah is said to be a daughter of William Rushing, and the witnesses to
the will (Ussery, Rushing) are her relations.... they were all connected up with the
Deasons (who are also connected with Henry Cato and Tabitha ).... and many of these
Rushings ended up in Tennessee/KY with some going on to Missouri and Arkansas.
I have a few other records relating to this Wm Johnson of Anson Co NC. What I can't
figure out... would the son David Johnson mentioned in the 1804 Wm Johnson Will be the
right age to be the same David Johnson who goes to KY and MO with the Catos and Ladds, and
has his estate settled there in about 1823 ??
The David Johnson who traveled to KY and MO could be the above William's brother, and
possible the same David Johnson mentioned in the SC deeds. Also, regarding the Bill
of Sale for Pat ---and it's recording in 1805--- the Kendrick database states that
there seems to be "no obvious reason" for the recording of this bill of sale in
1805...but I wonder if it could have been associated with the settlement of Wm
Johnson's estate in NC.
From the Christian County Court Order Book C. p 54. (Abstracted by
James Taylor Killebrew in " CC Court Order Book C, Parts 1 and 2. CCKy
1814-1819" publ 1999. CC Gen Society. p 36 in the Killebrew book. Page 54 in Court
Order Book C.)
1 May 1815. Michael CHRISMAN, appellant against Henry CATO, Apellee. On an appeal from a
judgement of Jos. Clark, Esq, this day came the parties by their attorneys and argument of
counsel being hear it is considered by the Court that the sd Appeal be dismissed and that
the appellee recover against the appellant his cost in this behalf expended.
NOTE: what is interesting about this is--- Michael CHRISMAN is also in Lancaster County,
South Carolina. Michel, Jacob and Michl Chrestman Jr witnessed the Will of my 5th
great-grandfather Lewis Fail in 1812, in Lancaster County. I apparently have the only
extant copy of this will, and no one doing Fail research has a clue what the connection
between the Fails and these Crisman/Chrestmans might be. Now I notice that Michael
Chrisman is right near Henry Cato on the Christian County census 1820. I wonder what the
dispute was about? And I wonder if there was some other connection (besides the dispute)
between them?
I have wondered if Sarah, the wife of Lewis Cato, might be from one of the
"Dutch" aka German families in the Lancaster County SC area, since they show up
as members of the Lutheran Church in Missouri along with several other families of German
descent (Chronister, Crites, etc) --- and there is obviously association with the
Chronisters, since not only are Lewis and Sarah Cato in the same church, but also William
Cato has the Mary A. Chronister and her child as part of his household in Wayne County.
I haven't had much luck tracking down Baptist church records in South Carolina.....
maybe we should check the Lutherans!
Just thinking out loud...
Best to All,
Cynthia
