Cyn,
I haven't found much on the FLOOD family (m. Mary CATO), but I'll send
the bits of what I have found (mainly in Surry Co.) on them. The only
tie to our area I can find is a sister of the following family moved to
Brunswick Co. & hence MIGHT have paved the way for some sort of a tie.
I'm just going to type up the whole thing on the very off chance we may
need it later. :)
The FLOOD family was very prominent in Surry.
FLOOD family (as written up in William & Mary):
John Flood came as a boy to VA in the 'Swan' in the year 1610. He was
probably a kinsman of Walter Flood, carpenter, whose will was proved in
London, Jan. 22, 1636, leaving estate in VA. In 1616 he was in the
service, at Chas. City, of Rev. Alexander Whitaker. In 1625 he was
living at Jordan's Jorney with his wife Margaret, who came over on the
'Supply', in which Wm. Tracy brought the emigrants to Berkeley hundred.
She was a widow & John Flood's muster, in 1625, are mentioned "her dau.
Francis Finch" and his son Wm. 3 mos. old. Flood was an active
energetic man & in 1630 he was a representative in the assembly for
Flower dewe Hundred. In 1632 he represented Westover, Flower dewe
Hundred & Weyanoke.
Not long after he changed his habitation from Chas. City Co. & patented
in James City, in 1632, 2,100 ac. upon the s. side of the river, "east
upon Capt. Henry Browne north upon the main river, south into the main
woods, and west upon Benj. Harrison's marked trees, being up the west
side of Sunken Marsh Creek." Among the persons for those for those he
provided transportation he claimed land where Mary Flood & John Flood,
Jr. In 1642 & again in 1645, as "Capt. John Flood", he represented, in
the grand assembly, Jas. City Co., then extending on both sides of the
river. It appears that Capt. Flood had much intercourse with the
Indians, & after the peace with Necotowance, in 1646, & the Indians were
forbidden to abode near the settlement, he was made Indian interpreter,
& it was encacted by the General Assembly that "for his service therein
& transporting such Indians as shall be employed from time to time to
the governor in message or otherwise, he be allowed from public the
salary of 4000 lbs of tobacco yearly." In 1652 & again in 1655, as "Lt.
John Flood", this ancient settler represented Surry Co. in the
Legislature. In 1661 he died, when his son, Capt. Thos. Flood,
succeeded him as Indian interpreter. John Flood came to the colony as a
poor boy & spent 50 years therein & rose to high honors. He m. (2)
Margaret Fitch, widow, & had issue: 2. William; 3. John - he was a
headright in the patent to John Flood in 1638. Probably it was his
widow, Mary, who m. John Washington in 1658. Col. John Flood m. (2)
Fortune Jordon, sister of George Jordon (I have a copy of his will -
BBP), & had issue: 5. Jane, m. John Cary, a prominent merchant; 6
Walter, b. 1656.
4. Thomas Flood (John 1) is mentioned in deed to Walter Flood, in 1692,
as son & heir of Capt. Thos. Flood. He d. in 1718, when his
administrator was his wife Ann. Her will was proved in Surry Co., Aug.
21, 1723 & names issue: 8. Wm.; 9. Henry; 10 Benj.; 11 Mary; 12. Ann.
9. Henry (Thos. 3, Thos. 2, John 1) made his will which was proved in
Surry Co. Oct. 5, 1740 & names issue: 13. Anne in England; 14.
Elizabeth, m. John Nicholson, of Surry Co...
6. Walter Flood (John 1) was b. about 1656, & in 1670, Mr. John Cary was
his guardian. There is in Surry Co. the record of bond given by Cary
that year to Lt. Col. George Jordan & to Capt. Thos. Flood, "to take
care of Walter Flood when he arrived in England, to keep him at school &
teach & educate him as his wife's brother." In 1677, having attained
full age, he released Mr. John Cary & Benj. Harrison, his attorneys,
from responsibility. He m. Anne Browne, dau. of Maj. Wm. Browne of 4
Mile Tree" Issue stated in Maj. Browne's will (proved Nov. 21, 1722)
15. John who m. Mary; 16. Walter who had d. before his father, leaving a
widow; 17. Fortune; 18. Mary; 19. Ann, married Wm. Cocke; 20.
Elizabeth. In his will, Walter Flood mentions his grandchildren John,
Jane & Fortune Flood. In his will proved Oct. 4, 1739, John Flood gave
his estate to his sister Fortune, & to Nicholas Edmunds, a prominent
magistrate in Brunswick Co. This latter m. a Flood & had a son named
John Flood Edmunds.
Fortune Jordan, the 2nd wife of Lt. Col. John Flood, m. 2nd, James
Mills, a merchant from Surry Co....
(from a different article in Wm. & Mary: John Flood Edmunds, Gent.,
produced Commission appointing him sheriff of the county & took
oaths...Mar. 1777 - Oct. 1782)
The above is the only thing I've found so far to even show that Floods
were in Brunswick Co. & it's not much! Considering, however, the
prominence of the Family, there should be a lot more on them SOMEWHERE!
I did find a really nice WALL family site. I don't know if you've seen
it yet, but it sure has a LOT of Brunswick history & is very
interesting.

More later! I'm still digging around!
