Sent out a query to va-roots list re: Drowning Creek in the hopes of
finding more about where Henry was in North Carolina. Mom forwarded it to
the NC-SC List. Got tons of responses! Many were very interesting re:
what the creek is like (dark, because of the tannic acid, lots of cypress,
50' wide in places, more like a river than a creek). Interestingalso was
the fact that Francis Marion (the "Swamp Fox" of the Rev War) was very
active in the area. The problem is that I'm afraid we are going to have to
search every county Drowning Creek ran through in 1763, to see if we can
find Henry (and it's a long river!) If anyone will help look, perhaps we
could divide the counties among us and make better progress. I just don't
believe that Henry had no land in NC! But some nice person looked up the
Catos in the 2vol NC Taxpayers and found only:
CATO, Francis Bertie Co 1757
George Bertie Co 1757
John Pitt Co 1764
Daniel Montgomery Co 1782
George Wayne Co 1786
Moses Perquimans 1772
and I think we already have this record. I do wonder whether we have
figured out who each one of these Cato's are, and where they went? Some I
think I know, but not all.
Thanks for your time,
Cynthia
