Here is a story that was related to me by Paul Stepp Sr at Greenbrier Mo
He said that when the Union soldiers came through and released all the slaves
in the area that they took Pete with them. That evening about dark as the
camped
at Kinder Mo just south of where the Cato's lived they had Pete retrieving
firewood for the campfire. One of the Union soldiers told Pete I know you
don't want to be with us so when you go after the next load of firewood, just
keep on going, and go on back to the Cato's for I know that is where you
want to be and I know that they will take care of you.
Cletes Cato in the area told me that when Pete died he as a boy helped
dig Pete's grave in the Cato Cemetery at Arab, Mo, but the family changed
their
mind and he was buried at Cape. He also told me that Pete used to walk back
to the Greenbrier area from Cape and visit with the family a couple of times
a year until he died.
Peter died April 1921 and the survivors were:
Wife Dehlia
James H
Jane Cato Davis
Ella Cato McGee
Minnie Cato Spalding
Emma Cato Lee
Rose Cato Ross
Lizzie Cato
Tilda Cato glover
Fred Cato
Oscar Cato
Arthur Cato
Lorrie Cato Adams
Belle Cato Georgery
Jessie L Cato
I hope this helps some and if you have any links or any stories from
these families I would love for you to share them with me.
