Beatrice Newman Baldwin: Martha E. NEWMAN CATO,
daughter of Solomon & Mary Ann Lowry NEWMAN (married
9/7/1809), was the great granddaughter of the
Revolutionary soldier, Jonathan NEWMAN, who served as
a private footman in Gen. MARION's Brigade in 1782.

Jonathan's service are filed in the S.C. Archives,
Columbia, S.C. Photocopies of these Indents are filed
in Dept. of Archives & History, Jackson, Mississippi.
Solomon NEWMAN migrated to Mississippi about 1880;
settled near Liberty, Amite County, and later moved,
about 1820, to Franklin County, near Eddiceton. About
1817, Jonathan NEWMAN (Rev. Soldier) sold his property
in Darlington Co., SC and joined his son, Solomon, in
Mississippi, where he died in 1823. His will is filed
in Book, Amite County, Miss. Wills, Vol. I.
Robert LOWRY, father of Mary Ann LOWRY NEWMAN, served
in the Revolutionary War with Gen. MARION's Brigade in
Dec. 1781 and July 1782. Ref: S.C. Rev. War Claims

Martha E. NEWMAN married first, John A. CATO, Jr., who
was killed in the Civil War July 14, 1864. She married
second, on Feb. 19, 1879, Edwin CATO, a cousin to her
first husband.
