Sorry, only a small part of this seemed to make it.
I'll try again:
Further MS/TN research notes:
Wayne Co., MS tax rolls:
1817 Burwell CATO 160 ac class 4 2nd quality on
Buckatunna, purchase, US, 2 slaves, tax 1.24
1818 Burrell CATO 1 white poll, tax 1.10 2/3
1819 Burwell CATOE 1 white poll, tax 1.00
1820 Burrell CATO, Sr. 2 slaves, tax 1.50
Elizabeth MASSEY was on the 1819 tax roll, 7 away
from
Burrell. She's also found on the 1820 Wayne Co., MS
census as:
Elizabeth MASSEY 100200 00001
This looks to be the same Elizabeth MASSEY as shown
in
Stewart Co., TN, where the tax roll there shows her
living on Cross Creek where Henry CATO had his
ferry.
She is the widow of William MASSEY as shown in his
will:
Will of William MASSEY proven in open Ct. by Philip
HOMBERGER. Elizabeth MASSEY was executrix. (He
wrote
the will as "of Montgomery Co., TN" but it was
executed by Elizabeth in Stewart Co.) Standard
opening about sound mind, sick in body... gives
beloved wife, Elizabeth MASSEY real estate &
personal
property during widowhood or until oldest son, John
arrives at 21. Everything else divided between wife
&
4 sons: John, William, Thomas & Henry MASSEY... &
"money due me *in the State of SC* be appropriated
for
uce of purchasing or securing lands for the use of
his
heirs". Provided for education & Christian teaching
of
children. "I do make, ordain & appoint my beloved
wife, Elizabeth MASSEY & Daniel PEOPLES, Henry
MASSEY's executrix & executor to this my last will &
testament." Oct. 6, 1804, Stewart Co., TN court
docket. Test: Phillip HORNBLOWER & Nath'l DENSON.
Elizabeth is later found in the 1840 census of
Simpson
Co., MS as follows:
#213 Elizabeth MASSEY 0 00000000001 (55+ yrs old)
#213 William MASSEY 3200101 003001 (b 1790-1800)
#217 Thomas MASSEY 301001 010001 (b 1800-1804 using
census & will)
(John was in Humphries Co., TN & not sure about
Henry)
Judge MASSEY believes this family to be the William
MASSEY, Jr. family of Lancaster Co., SC & before
that
from Franklin Co., TN & previous to that, from
Brunswick/Greensville Co., VA.
I'm beginning to think the missing Burrell & James
(&
Nehemiah who's across the river from Wayne Co., MS &
working in the Choctaw Trading post there by 1817)
may
be somehow tied in with the Stewart Co., TN group -
not sure how since Burrell doesn't mention TN on his
pension, but there did appear to be 2
Burwell/Burrells
in MS at the same time.
Later,
Bonnie
