Starting from the info that Tim sent re: the children of William Cato of Wilkes, and the
movement of the family from Wilkes County GA to Gordon/Floyd County GA, I find this
record:
1880 GA Floyd County Barker's District 71 household 20/20
CATO, William 60 born GA (bc 1820) father born MARYLAND mother born NC
CATO, Nancy C. 37 wife GA GA GA (bc 1843)
CATO, Richard T.? or J.? 16 son AL GA GA (c 1864)
CATO, L. Ida 14 dau AL GA GA (bc 1866)
CATO, Ellen H. 8 dau GA GA GA (bc 1872)
CATO, Julia A. 4 dau GA GA GA (bc 1876)
CATO, Sallie SISTER born GA father born MARYLAND mother born NC (bc 1813)
So if this is the son of William of Wilkes County, then the father MAY have sprung from
one of the Maryland Catos!
Following this family:
1870 GA Floyd Co Division 141 PO Rome hh 1082/1043
CATO, William 50 GA
CATO, Carrie N. 27 GA
CATO, Richard T.? 6 GA

CATO, Sallie 55 GA (sister)
CATO, Wm A. 23 GA
1860 AL Barbour County Beat 3 PO Midway

CATO, Lucinda 26 GA (sister?)

and sisters)

CATO, Lucy 65 NC
CATO, Mary 45 GA
CATO, Sarah 35 GA
CATO, Lucinda 21 GA
1850 GA Wilkes County Division 94 hh 254/254
CATO, Christopher 32 GA (brother to William?)
CATO, Racheal 27 GA
CATO, William 3 GA
CATO, Ellen 3 GA
CATO, Peter 6 months GA
There might be some kind of will or probate record for Lucy Cato....she seems that she
died between 1860 and 1870, but not sure whether the record would be in AL or in GA.
It also seems like there could be an estate settlement for William Cato the father,
sometime between 1840 and 1850 in Wilkes County GA.
And there should be some deeds in these counties, particularly I would think in Wilkes Co
GA, around 1850-1860 when they moved to Alabama? And maybe also in Barbour County AL c
1866-70, when they moved back to GA.
It looks to me like they left Wilkes County for Alabama in late 1850's, stayed in AL
during the war, and returned after the war to Floyd County GA, across the state from
Wilkes.
I wonder why Barbour County ALA?? We have other Catos there, including : Lewis Lewellen
Cato and Sterling G. Cato, both of whom were born in GA and are thought to be the children
of Green Cato.... who is thought to be a son of Sterling Cato (brother of Henry of SC/KY)
......
It could be totally coincidental that this William Cato went with family to BarbourCounty
AL, but it's worth checking out.
All this is very interesting!
