LIST, two researchers of the Missouri Catos and I have been working
on this family for quite a while, and still can come to no solid conclusions. Perhaps
there is someone on the List who is working on this line, and can help.
We have two Artimissia Catos in Bollinger County, Missouri, both born at about the same
time (about 1851). In the 1860 census, Artemissia #1 and #2 are listed in separate
households (one with William Cato and Winney (Wills) Cato, one with the Green Cato
family), age about 9, born in Missouri.
There is a marriage record (Bollinger County marriage book 1) date 14 Nov 1867: Drury
Massey to Artemissia Cato.
Does anyone know who the parents of this Drury Massey who married Artemissia Cato were?
We think that Drury Massey died shortly after this marriage. Artimissia married 2.
Hamilton Jackson, whom she divorced about 1880. The problem is, the divorce papers state
that Hamilton Jackson and Artimissia were married in August of 1872 and continued to live
together until about 1877.
BUT in 1870, we have a census record for Hamilton Jackson and an Artemissia:
1870 Wayne County MO/Jefferson Township
JACKSON, Hamil 21 MO
JACKSON, Artemissia 22 MO
JACKSON, Martha 4 months b Jan in MO
We think this might be ONE of the Artemissia Catos, that this one died, and that Hamilton
Jackson married second to the OTHER Artemissia Cato in 1872, divorced about 1880. I
hope you are still with me, this gets complicated!
ALSO in 1870, we have this record in Wayne County/Bollinger Township:
JACKSON, David 53 NC
JACKSON, Mary 52 TN
JACKSON, Sarah 27 MO
JACKSON, Allen 19 MO
JACKSON, Mary 16 MO
JACKSON, Hosea 13 MO
JACKSON, Julia 10 MO
JACKSON, MARTHA 6 months old, born in January in MO (LIKELY THE SAME child MARTHA
JACKSON with Hamil and Artemissia??)
In 1880, Bollinger County MO District 9:
JACKSON, Artemissia 29 MO MO MO divorced
MASSEY, James 12 son MO MO MO (bc 1868)
MASSEY, Adeline 10 dau MO MO MO (bc 1870)
JACKSON, Henry 2 son TEXAS MO MO (bc1878)
ALSO in 1880 Bollinger County District 9:
JACKSON, David 60 NC NC NC widower
JACKSON, Hamilton 29 son MO NC NC divorced (Artemissia's ex-husband)
JACKSON, Mary 26 dau MO NC NC
JACKSON, Julia 22 dau MO NC NC
HINKLE, Leo? Lee? 22 grandson MO NC NC
SO----- where are these two children James MASSEY and Adeline MASSEY, in the 1870
census???? It seems like they would be with their mother, the Artemissia who married
Drury Massey in 1867....but we cannot find the family. Did this Drury Massey removed to
another state and die there? We just don't know.
Artemissia was quite a character. She was married at least two more times, once to a
SITZE and next to a SHROUT. She married in 1886 to Solomon SITZE (and also divorced him).
In 1906 at age about 55 she married Joseph Shrout.
We find her on the 1930 census of Wayne County/Jefferson Township as:
SHROUT, Artemiss. age 80. widow. age 17 at first marriage. born MO MO MO
Next door is her son, Henry Lewis JACKSON, age 52, born TEXAS, MO MO with his family.
Adruain and Shirley, the champion Missouri researchers, have proven with deeds found in
Wayne Co MO that the Artemissia Cato who married Hamilton Jackson was the daughter of
William CATO. This would be the same Artemissia who married Drury MASSEY in 1867.
She filed for a pension based on the Civil War service of late husband Drury MASSEY
(Union soldier) in about 1932. We have been trying to get our hands on this pension
application for over a year. Because of the late filing date, it is not located at the
National Archives.
I find a possible father for Drury Massey husband of Artemissia Cato, in the 1860 census
of Bollinger County Lawrence Township:
MASSEY, Drury age 63 MO physician (if birthplace is correct, he was in Missouri VERY
EARLY, c 1797!!)
MASSEY, Mariah 43 (all born MO)
MASSEY, Christina E. 20
MASSEY, William D. 17
MASSEY, ADALINE 17 (same name Adaline as given to daughter of Artemissia and
Drury...proves zip but might be a clue)
MASSEY, Harvey 8
MASSEY, Artarisa 6
MASSEY, Lourina 4 months
Does anyone besides the three of us have any knowledge of these JACKSON and MASSEY
families ?? Would appreciate your input.
Best,
Cynthia
