Hi Tim,
Sounds interesting about the stone house and the graveyard, too bad there aren't
stones! That would be Christopher and Rachel, do I have that right? I grew up in Ga,
outside Atlanta, and the area around Rome is beautiful.
Yes, you are right, if William Sr of Wilkes was born about 1780-90, then he was too young
for the Rev War. But he might have other military records, maybe War of 1812?
I found what I think is another brother, Thomas Cato, and maybe the youngest sister Lucy:
1870 GA Floyd County PO Rome
CATO, Thomas 56 GA (1814)
CATO, Elizabeth 52 GA (1818)
CATO, Lucy 45 GA (1825)
1880 GA Gordon County Sugar Valley Dist 109 hh 61/62
CATOE, Thomas 67 GA "Maryland" NC (1813) (Maryland written out in the
record)
CATOE, Elizabeth 61 GA VA GA (1819)
Do you know what happened to the brother Charles? And I keep seeing another daughter
named "Allama" listed in online databases, any idea where people are getting
that info?
I need to check my file on the Maryland Catos, haven't had the time yet. There was
definitely a RevWar soldier named William Cato from Maryland but he "died of his
wounds" in 1781, and the administrator of his estate (John Cato) sold Wm's
bounty land warrant. Don't know much more about that family off the top of my head.
Will let you know. It's hard to call because I live in Ireland and the time
difference is five hours later than you.
Best,
Cynthia

Subject: Re: [CATO] A little progress on William Cato of Wilkes Co GA
Looks like you have been very busy today THANK YOU ! Christopher and
Rachel' s son William married a Lucy Wood here in Floyd County. They lived
in the Chulio District. The house in which they lived was built by Lucy's
Father. It was made out of rock and was HUGE. It burned down last year.
On the property where the house was is a cemetery. My granddaddy use to
say that his grandparents were buried there. There are imprints in the ground
where graves are, but if there are any markers they have fallen down and
have been covered up with leaves and dirt. I havent found any yet.
Christopher is listed in the 1870 census but not in the1880. I saw online where
somebody had his death as being in Wilkes Co. I cant find any record of it.
Christopher had a son named Peter. Peter's grandson is still living here
in Rome, his name is George Cato. I work for UPS and dont get home till
around 730/ 8pm. If you would like to talk call me at 706-291-0837 Thank you
for looking. Do you think this is the William that was in the Rev War?
Probably his father.... Tim
