Hi all,
Have been reading through the Revolutionary War pension file of George Cato of Maryland,
and noticed that there is a little note from his Captain (Hebard Smallwood) in which
Smallwood states that he "has known George Cato since infancy..."
So I did a little work on the Smallwood family, and find that they lived their lives in
Charles County, MD., where George is also found on the 1790 census. This seems to imply
that George was born there or in the near vicinity, so it seems a good working hypotheses
that George didn't pop over to MD from another Cato family.
Is anyone working on this line? I can find George on the 1790 and 1800 census, but
don't find him on the 1810 or 1820 or 1830.
There is an old message on the Cato list which states that "There is a William in
Maryland who has sons John and George." Does anyone know what this refers to? A
William Cato is found on the Revol. War Rolls of the 2nd Md Regt (a different one from
George Cato), and he receives bounty land which is later sold by his heir, John Cato. But
I can't find a reference which places a William, a John, AND a George together.
Can anyone help?
Thanks!
