Bonnie and Adruian,
I now can say that my construction of the family of Daniel Cato in
Stewart Co., Tn. is more than just fantasy. As you know my theory
has been recently that he was the son of Burwell Cato and was in
Montgomery Co., N.C. in 1790 along with his mother Judith and was
there in 1800 with 7 sons, 3 daughters and an older woman who
was probably Judith. When he died in Stewart Co. in 1814 he had
a minor son of 15 yrs. named Rufus. Rufus was married without
children in the 1820 census of Stewart Co., Tn. He moved to Carroll
Co., Tn. where he has been found in both the 1830 and 1840
census but not in the 1850 census, In the 1840 census he is listed
as: 0210001-1200001 (b.1790-00). I have found him in Yalabusha
Co., Ms. in the 1850 census as follows
p. 405 Rufus Cato 52 yrs. M N.C.
Nancy 54 yrs. F N.C.
Robert 18 yrs. M Tn. (the next to
youngest son)
William 16 yrs. M Tn. (the youngest
son )
Nancy 13 yrs. F Tn. (youngest
Daughter)
Then I went looking for the birth of Henry Cato of Stewart Co. His
estate was inventoried and sold in 1859 but he is not in the 1850
census of Stewart Co. according to Sistler. So I did the old
fashion way. I read the census. I found both Henry and George in
the census that Sistler had left out. They are:
p. 384 Henry Cato 52 yrs. M N.C.
George Elvis 22 yrs. M Tn. or N.C. (Is written
over)
Martha 29 yrs. F Tn. or N.C. (Is
written over )
Elizabeth 7 yrs. F Tn. or N.C. (Is
written over)
The men I have thought were sons of Henry and Tabitha were all
born in S.C. The same is so for those who I am thinking are sons
of Sterling. Here we find that these two that I think are sons of
Daniel were born in N.C. This may be all the proof we are going
to find. We now know that Henry and Richard of Wayne Co., Mo.
and Needham and James of Ark.were born in S.C. and Henry and
Rufus of Stewart Co., Tn. were born in N.C. With the exception
of James, I think all of those men in the Stewart Co. records are
sons of Daniel.
There is an Alfred Cato in Yazoo Co. Ms in 1830 who may be the
Alfred of Stewart Co. His census record is Males,0-10 (2), 20-40 (1);
Females, 0-10 (3), 10-20 (1), 20-40(1). I have not found him in a
later census I shall keep looking.
