Folks,
Everybody has been quite quiet the last few months since Bonnie went into
genealogical hibernation. However I suspect that research has continued. It
has been so with me but until today I had not turned up anthing new.
I have been looking for some time for evidence on the whereabouts of
George Edwin Cato in Wilson Co., Tn. before his marriage in 1822 to Euphenia
Rieff. I could not find any evidence of a Cato name before then. Today I
found the following in the Sumner Co., Tn. records of Pleas and Quarter
Sessions: Second Monday, Sept., 1809, "App't Edwin Perry guardian to minor
orphans George E. Cater, Britian Cater, John Wesley Cater; bond $160 with
Henry Belote and Jeremiah Belote, securities. I found no evidence of any
estate record and no deeds for Cato, nor no name of Cato on available tax
records. However in pursuing records on Edwin Perry, I found that he was sued
in Court Oct 1798 by Thomas Hickman and bought 160 acres land from James
Winchester March 1804. This land is probably located near the north side of
the Cumberland River near the town of Castalian Springs in Sumner Co. It
would seem that it was a maternal uncle or grandfather rather than a paternal
uncle or grandfather that cared for George Edward Cato. I wonder if anyone
has any record on Edwin Perry in Greensville Co., Va. If so, please come
forward.
