Linda,
You have gone back pretty far. In some cases You are following the work in some places
that has been published in the past but I and Bonnie Baker Palmer a number of years did a
lot of research on the Cato family together and definitely proved some of the early work
wrong. Bonnie is the one who a number of years established the Cato Website, Her family is
from Arkansas also and she knows probably more than most on the family. However she
apparently got tired of genealogy and quit it and I do not know how to get in touch with
her any more She changed her E-mail address to stop letters.
I have written a book on the Cato family as a result of our research but have never
published it because it will go into a larger book or books on the ancestors of my
grandchildren. I am not a Cato. My wife was, a descendant of Sterling born about 1755/6.
To get the proof of my work or the reasons why I think a family is so constructed where
proof is lacking you need the whole Cato booklet. It is indexed and over 80 pages long. I
will print it from my computer, paper bind it for $30 plus $3 mailing costs, if you wish
one. Actually it looks like you may have had access to some of my work already when you
say Sterling had 19 children. I think I was the first to determined that. Bonnie Palmer
was the first to determine that John Cato married Elizabeth Nannie as a 2nd wife.
Now you have some 3rd names on a number of people that I have never seen before. I wonder
where you got these middle names or first names.
Here is the descent.
1)- John and Joanne Cator (b. ca 1600)
2)- John and Mary Cator (b. ca 162?)
3)- John Cayto Jr. (b. ca 1650)
4)- George and Mary Catour (b. in the 1670's). She was NOT Mary Poole. Mary Poole was
a daughter-in-law
5)- John and Jane Cook Cato (b. 1705-10). The John Henry Cato’s in Ark. are descendants of
John Cato a son of the second marriage to Elizabeth Nannie.
6)- Henry and Tabitha ? Brewer Cato ( b before 1737) I have never seen the name of George
as this man’s first name. Your list of children are correct as far as you go but there was
also a son Henry who married secondly Polly Ladd and moved to Wayne Co., MO and a daughter
Tabitha who married 1st Francis Ladd and they also moved to Wayne Co., MO. She married
secondly a Mr. Masters. There were at least 3 unnamed daughters.
7)- Sterling Cato (b. about 1755-6) his first wife may have been a Horton. He was married
3 times. I have never seen Henry as his first name. He had a son Sterling b. about 1795
who had a son Sterling who was b. in 1827. He probably had 19 children by his first 2
wives and none by his third wife.
8)- Needham Cato (b. about 1790) married Anne.
9)- Thomas E. Cato (b. 1843). This is as far I have traced this line.
