We took a little ride this morning down to the Carthage, Tn,
county seat of Smith County. This small town is about an 1 and 1/2
hour drive from here and was just a beautiful drive to a georgous
part of Tn and located on the banks of the Cumberland river. here
are some tidbits we found.
First of all the local library didn't have the early pioneer handbook that
you found in Tx. What we did find though was in the book titled,
"Genealogical Abstracts from Tennesse newspapers 1791-1808."
1) Letters remaining at the Post Office in Nashville as of Jan 31 1807--

2)This is from Court records March term 1808
By virture of a writ of venditioni exponea directed to me from the court
of Smith Co., there will be exposed to the public sale in the town of
Carthage on the 25th of May next, lot #66, the property of John Simes.
The property was taken to satisfy a judgement obtained against Simes
and Sterling Cato by Lewis Johnston. George Matlock, D.S.
3)Tennesse convicts: records of the State Penitentiary
John B Wright was received 21 Mar 1833. he is 6' 1" wt 172 Dr Hair
grey eyes long nose rather Dk conplexion 31 yrs of age. Bn Davidson Co Tn
wife and three children at home on Hamilton Creek--12 mile from Nashville.
Wright's wife maiden name is Cato -her complexion all live in the same
neighborhood as his family. convicted of Larcency, sentenced 3 yrs.
Died of a fit Aug 17 1835 his conduct was good. ledger 45 p 218
4)Catt, Solomon P. Tennesse Tidbits 1778-1914 Vol ll
10 May 1830 took the oath of alliegiance to become a citizen of the
United States. He is from the United Kingdom of Great Britian and has been
in this country more than 5 yrs. He has been a citizen of this state more
than 1 yr, and is a man of good moral character. On May 11 Soloman P Catt
petitioned the court to change his name to Soloman P Catoe, his wife's name
to Jane Catoe
and his daughter 's name to Mary Jane Catoe. The petition was granted (ibid
117)
Also found some early Tn marriages if anyone is interested.
