To summarize: We have Daniel (son Rufus b. 1799), Nathan (in 1810
census), Richard Sr., Louis (Lewis), Henry (of Wayne Co., Mo.), Henry
(of Stewart Co., Tn.) born before 1790 to consider and determine who
their fathers were. Both Sterling and Henry each had 3 sons in the
1790 census. However there is a possibility that Vinson was still at
home in Henry's house in 1790. Between 1790 and 1800 Sterling had at
least 2 additional sons. We have however Needham, Starling and James
that we know of that apparently were born during that decade. Then in
the decade 1800-10, Sterling apparently had 3 more sons, Louis had 1
son and Nathan had 1 son. Known men born during that decade to
consider are Claiborn, Wiley, Simeon, Ranson and Uriah (m. 1827,
voted 1829). However there are others whose birth we do not know but
they were surely born before 1810, probably before 1800. They are
Burwell (maintained a pauper in Stewart Co., Tn. 1813-15), Alfred
(owed taxes in Stewart Co, Tn, 1813-15), Roger (gave a deposition in
Stewart Co., Tn. in 1811-12). So we seem to have too many people
available for sons according to the census records. It would seem
that some sons left home early and are not recorded in later censuses.
Bonnie, I have to believe that your Nelson (Needom, Needham) was a
son of Sterling. Henry had a son Needham that stayed in S.C. Your
Needom named sons Amos, Martin and Alfred. Nathan (probably a son of
Sterling) named a son Martin. James, who I favor as a son of Sterling,
named a son Amos. The Alfred in Stewart Co. records I favor as a son
of Sterling. The names fit. I recently went back to Hopkinsville
looking for ways to proof all of this. There are no estate records,
inventories, guardianships relative Sterling or Henry. Moreover the
there are no deeds on record for the land that Henry, Sterling,
Richard, Louis, Elizabeth (John) were being taxed for.
Please give this some thought and feed back.
