Wayne Co., Mo. Cato study 1830 and 1850
This is an expanded version of a study of census records that I put
on the internet yesterday unsuccessfully. I have looked at the 1850
censuses of Missouri and Arkansas and tried to fit them into the 1830
census of Wayne Co., Mo., since all but James of Prairie county
seemed to have been in Wayne County in 1830. James is the James that
sat on a jury in Stewart Co., Tn. 1815-19 I think. This is a working
model to assist us in further research. My study of the Lancaster Co.,
S.C. and Christian Co., Ky. censuses have led me to believe that
Sterling Cato had 8 sons. In the past I identified 8 men in the
records of Christian Co., Ky. and Stewart Co., Tn. that I thought
were these sons. They were Daniel, Nathan, Henry (who settled in
Stewart Co., Tn.), Burwell, James, Alfred, Roger and Claiborn Henry.
However the revelation by Adruian of Richard, Louis (Lewis) and
Needom (Needham) in Christian Co., Ky. (a fact heretofor unknown to
me) and this present study is leading me to reconsider who are
Henry's sons and who are Sterling's sons and how many sons Nathan had.
I will discuss this more in my summary. I have also included the
names of the sons of Claiborn H. Cato and Nathan Cato from the 1850
census of Christian Co., Ky. Naming patterns can sometimes help in
differentiating people.
Please note that recently I pointed out that probably Henry and
Tabitha and their younger children were in the 1790 census of
Lancaster Co., S.C. in the listed household of their son William and
that it would appear that they had 3 sons at home under the age of 16
years in 1790. At that time Sterling also had 3 sons at home . In
1800 only one of Henry's sons remained at home (probably son Henry).
In that census Sterling had 4 sons at home and one son (Daniel)
married. I suspect that there other sons also out of the home,
perhaps with Daniel who has not been found in tha census record. In
1810 Sterling had 3 more sons (if Claiborn is one of his sons. He was
I think living at the time in the home of Nathan but was not an heir
of Nathan). These are the people we have to work with. I have listed
some as children of certain people based on age, proximity of homes
and naming patterns. If anyone has evidence to support or disprove
these assumptions and clarify the unknown, please come forth.
This study will have to be transmitted in more than one message due
to its length.
