Cynthia,
The Judge S. G. Cato is Sterling Green Cato the older brother of my gg
grandfather Lewis L. Cato. They were sons of Green Cato and his second wife
Martha Jane Sweeny (nee Mitchell). Sterrling moved from Hancock Co., Ga. to
Eufaula, Al. and read law there. Lewis and their mother followed and the
brothers formed the law firm Cato & Cato in Eufaula. Sterling was appointted an
Associate Justice in the Kansas Territory (possiblly through connections
through Lewis Cato's sister-in-law, Susan Richardson, who was married to the
younger brother of Robert Toombs - U. S. senator at the time and later Secretary
of State, C. S. A.). While in Kansas, he had run-ins with John Brown's son.
After serving a couple of years in Kansas he moved to Kansas City, Mo. where
he died. The newspaper notice is new info as the only date I have been able
to find was circa 1868.
