Found this record at the SC Archives Website.
Anyone have an idea who Mary Cato is?
PLAT, 1791/12/19
David James, plat for 250 acres on waters of Broad River, Camden District, surveyed by W. Cato for Mary Cato on Oct 18, 1787.
Names mentioned: David James, Mary Cato, W. Cato, Drury Bishop, Robert Hancock, Henry Liles, James Newton, Thomas Nelson.
Adruain,
There is a Benjamin F. Cato of Butler County, MO, Gillis Bluff, age 21, listed in the Index of Butler Co MO Bk 3 marriage applications.
I can't figure out what years these Books cover...the file as USGenWeb doesn't say....but wondered if this was your Benj F. Cato, and what kind of info was to be found in a marriage application? There are several Catos indexed.
Cynthia
I think that all we know about William C. Cato is
1. That he was a soldier, War of 1812, McWillie's Reg't, SC (Have read these soldiers were mostly from York County?)
2. That there is a bill of sale, 1818/3/13, Mary Baker to Wm C. Cato, sale of a 23 year old female slave named Lizar. (SC Archives, series number S213003, Vol 004S, page 00086)
On the SC Archives website, the text of this Bill of Sale seems to be garbled. Wondered if anyone has actually looked at it? There might be more information there? Like what District they were in? I'm just assuming that this is the same William C. Cato, it might not be.
Trying to figure out who this Wm C. Cato is, and where he ends up....
Thanks,
Cynthia
Hi all,
In Burwell Cato's 1855 Bounty Land Application, filed by his widow Frances, aged 72, one of the affiants states that Burwell "left several children who inherited their shares of his property."
Two of his children, Lewis and Sterling, are witnesses in the app.
Does anyone know of any deeds or estate settlements filed at the time of Burrel's death on 19 Sept 1848? Just wondering if there are more children of Burrell's besides Henry, Sterling and Lewis. Census seems to indicate some daughters.
Cynthia
I don't think I've posted this before. If I have, please forgive....if anyone is interested, I will post the entire file.
Info from the Southern Claims files of Lewis Cato (son of Burwell), from film at the National Archives
Lewis did not win his case, but his heirs did, eventually. The case is strung out over the years 1873-1911.
Lewis Cato died about the 20th of August 1885 at Jefferson Co, Mississippi
His wife Mary Cato was a witness in 1873.
Heirs of Lewis Cato (as of 1911) were:
Frances S. Smith of Sandersville, Jones Co, Miss
Melissa C. Herndon, wife of Jesse R. Herndon, of Sandersville, Jones Co, Miss
Allen B. Cato of Memphis Tn
Geo W. Cato of Memphis Tn
L.A. Cato of Union Church Miss
Mary A. Godbold of Meridian, Lauderdale Co, Miss
W.A. (Wm A.)Cato, deceased, late of Austin Tx (he served in War, CSA, was living with Lewis in 1873)
John W. Cato, who was killed in the war and apparently left no family
Sterling Cato, brother of Lewis, states in his 1873 claim that he had 4 or 5 nephews in the army, that there is but 2 now living, the others being killed in the war.
One nephew lives with his father whose place adjoins his.
The other nephew is living in Virginia.
Lementon N. Cato is listed as a witness to Sterling's claim, but there is no deposition from him in the file.
A former slave deposes that Sterling had 4 daughters and 2 sons, the oldest about 9 years old at the start of the war.
Best,
Cynthia

Henry,
I'm having quite a time finding evidence to prove anything at all! Have been looking at what I have on the "Williams" lately, and boy is it confusing.
I do see that John Cook, William Cato, Henry Cato and Sterling Cato all had land on the Black River in SC. (William, Henry and Sterling's land was on Tar Coat Swamp.) Which William this is I have not figured out yet.
And I notice that John Cook has two plats in 1784, both surveyed by Phillip Pearson.
So Phillip Pearson was a surveyor, that's interesting, isn't it? That must be how William Cato of Fairfield got into surveying.
William Cato, John Pearson and Phillip Pearson are also listed together several times as affiants in Rev War pension applications.
None of this proves anything, but maybe we are getting closer...

Hi all,
Was looking at some info on the Pearson family and came across something I
had not noticed before re: William Cato of Fairfield County SC. He was
obviously closely associated with the Pearson family, living with Phillip Pearson
and family for a time, according to the Rev War pension application. There is
an affidavit in that file from Mary Butler Pearson, wife of Phillip. In it,
she states that Phillip Pearson even provided a house for William Cato on
his land. And William Cato is found in many records/deeds in association with
the Pearsons.
Now, according to some Pearson research I found on the web, John Cook, who
was the brother of Jane Cook who married John Cato in Va (parents of Henry and
Sterling) was married to Martha Pearson, the sister of Phillip Pearson. So
Henry and Sterling Cato's Uncle John Cook was married to the sister of
Phillip Pearson whom William Cato lived with for a time in SC. Don't know where
this gets us, exactly, but it's interesting...

John Cook was born about 1740 in Brunswick Co, Va. He served in the RW in
SC. His wife Martha Pearson Cook died in SC after the war, leaving children.
John Cook removed to Hancock County, Ga, where he died, in 1797? I have not
verified this date. Said to be buried at Island Creek Church in Hancock Co
Ga.
