Bonnie,
I have read your note on the William Cato's with much anticipation. I
appreciate it very much. However I have some questions about some of it which
may be in some cases due to a lack of information or understanding. In this
letter I must be the Devil's advocate. Bonnie these are the same ideas I
wrote to you yesterday and this letter was written before you sent me tonight
your letter of comment on my letter. I have not studied these comments yet
and do not know if you have changed my opinion as yet or not. I shall put to
the whole group my ideas as they are presently
You say that the William Cato who was a soldier in the Rev. was a brother of
Sterling (and therefore a son of John and Jane) because Sterling came to the
same area. It is true Sterling came to the same area at least 3 or 4 years
later but the information I have is that this William was born in Halifax Co.
or Dist., NC. (Huxford Gen. Magazine, Vol. XXIII, number 3). If this is so,
then he would not be a son of John who we have no record of owning land or
ever living in NC. The younger William Cato who sold of the land of the
older William Cato of Northampton Co., NC in 1778, in time to fight at the
siege of Augusta in 1779, seems like a good, in fact better possibility for
this William Cato, a Rev. War soldier of Georgia. Northampton Co. was a part
of the Halifax Dist of NC. There are many incidences where the District was
used in locating a place instead of using the County, both in NC and SC. In
the 1790 census of North Carolina the State is divided into Districts with
the Counties as subdivisions of the Districts. The same is true in SC.
With this and my previous letter in which I have discussed the George Cato in
Camden Dist., SC, I have covered the brothers William and George of
Northampton Co., NC and eliminated them from consideration in my opinion from
later discussion.
It is my opinion that William of Brunswick in the road orders of 1733 was the
same man who acquired land in Northampton Co. NC on 6/22/1749 on the North
side of Jack's Swamp. This was right on the Va. line and surely was very
close to where John and Daniel lived on Fountains Ck. in Virginia. Jack's
Swamp empties into Fountains Ck.. I think old William was dead by 1778 when
his children sold out.
I do not know where you are getting this William Sr. and Jr. of Fairfield, I
only know of one William of Fairfield before 1820. There was no second
William in Fairfield until William of Fairfield's son William Jr., who was
born ca 1794, reached manhood and has his own household in 1820, listed in
age as 16-26 yrs. I cannot agree with the idea that William of Fairfield was
the William Jr. of Northampton because William Jr. of Northampton was there
until 1778 whereas William of Fairfield was buying land in Fairfield in 1772
from Thos. Parrott. You have William Jr. of Fairfield as born in 1759. Where
did this date come from? William of Fairfield's daughter Frances Harrison who
applied for a pension on his service said he was born in 1755. However the
1800 census has him over 45 yrs., born before 1755. I suspect he was born
1750/51 since he bought land in 1772 ( had to be 21 yrs.) and was 70-80 years
old in 1830 census (b. 1750-60). Who his father was remains in doubt but
since he named a son Stephen Francis I believe his father was either named
Stephen or Francis. I favor Francis with his grandfather being Stephen for
reasons that will be given below. I think he had a brother named Stephen
Francis for whom he surveyed land in Fairfield in 1795. You have William of
Fairfield as marrying in 1786 yet he had 2 sons and 2 daughters in 1790
census, rather fast on the trigger I would say. Also his oldest son is 16-26
yrs. in 1800 census, thus born 1774-84. From the 1830 census we can conclude
that the oldest son, Phillip Wade Cato was born 1780-84. William had 9
children born before 1800, indicating a marriage before 1786, since children
of most nursing mothers are born around 2 years apart. I think he married
around 1780/1. He was very busy fighting the War before, having participated
in almost every engagement of the Rev. War in SC.
In 1790 in Edgecombe Co., NC there were two Cato men who I suspect are
brothers. They are
Stephen Cato (Jr., I think) listed as 22400.
William Cato listed as 12400 (a son of Stephen Sr. who was too young to
testify in 1742).
Both seem to be gone in 1800 but there is another younger William still there
listed as 00010-011. I suspect that this younger William is the over 16 yr.
old son of Stephen in the 1790 census. Stephen's other two sons could be
Francis and Cullen Cato who were in Hancock Co., Ga. 1810. Cullen was in
Martin Co., NC in 1792.
Since William of 1790 census was still in NC as late as the 1790 he seems to
be a prime candidate for the William Cato who is said to be the father of a "
William Cato 1789-1868, the forefather of the name in Coffee Co., Ga. who was
born in North Carolina in 1789 and was a the son of William Cato, a Rev. War
soldier, of Halifax Co., NC who moved to Green Co., Ga. where he died.
William the subject, came to Georgia with his parents and left home early and
migrated to Montgomery Co. His wife Polly Ann was born 1790 in SC but her
maiden name has not been learned. William Cato lived in Montgomery Co until
about 1821-22 when he removed to Telfair Co. where he lived until his death.
His children were William, b. 1809; Henry, b. 1810; Candacy, b. 1812; Robert,
b. 1814; Mary, b. 1818; Cassandra, b. 1823; Jincy, b. 1824; Jemina, b. 1828;
John, b. 1829; Olive, b. 1832." The William of the 1790 census of Edgecombe
Co., NC had another son in the 1790 census that has not been identified.
There is one other William who lived in Wilkes Co., Ga. born in the 1770's
that has not been identified. Presently I am guessing he is a son of the
William of Washington Co who was a Rev. War soldier and who I think is
William Jr. of Northampton Co., NC, since we have a son William for Francis,
Stephen Jr. and Stephen Sr. George (Stephen's son) apparently only had a son
John and Syrack had no children.

Bonnie,
Thanks for the messages, they are helping to clear my head after a few
months of looking at Hortons, Lees, Blackmans and Fails. We think we have
problems with Cato!
I can't say that I have anything new or earth shattering to add right now.
I have been wondering again about the Henry Cato m Tabitha MASSEY theory.
Just can't figure out why or how Judge Massey would have come up with this.
Surely he must have seen something somewhere. Too bad he didn't put some
kind of source in his book.
It sure is depressing when searches turn up nothing but my own old queries!
Want to look at Prince George County Va records (what's left of them) and
check for Cato. Still haven't done this.
Thanks again, and Happy New Century to all!

Anyone interested in the Ladds might be interested in this story.
On 1-4-00 I went to the Christian Co Library in Hopkinsville Ky.
The local historian Betty McCorkle said if I was researching the
Cato's and Ladd's I might want to visit a Hartwell Wood who has
quite a story on the Ladd's. I drove North on hwy 91 toward Princeton,
turned West on 624, then proceded on about 1 and 1/2 mile to an old
abandoned two story house, turned left at the lane just before the
house and continued on up the lane to Hartwell Wood residence.
After introducing ourselves I asked Mr Wood if he knew anything
about the Ladd family. He looked puzzled at first and I added Old
Benjiman Ladd? He said that does remind me of a story his Dad told him
when he was 11 yrs old and before his Dad died later that year. Mr Wood
stated that he was 94 yrs old and would turn 95 later this year.
He said that back on the "ridge field" which is on the back of their farm,
is a large tillable field. He said that the reason he remembers this story is
because of the way it happened. When he was 11 yrs old they were chopping
weeds and briars near an old homestead when they happened upon an
old limestone headstone without any markings on it. He asked who might be
buried there and his Dad said "Old Benjiman Ladd". There was an older Black
man working with them and he said He raised his grubbing hoe over his head and
said "well ByGod let's dig him up and see what he looks like", as he thrust
his hoe downward into the ground above the grave.
Mr Wood said that the old house and the cabin down by the creek are now
gone but were there when he was a kid. They leased the ground and some
tenants plowed over the grave, and that disturbed him quite a bit.
He went on to say that the building behind his house was the dividing line
for the watershed in the area, anything East of the ridge flowed to Horse
Creek
and anything West of the ridge flowed to the Muddy Fork.
I told him that I was sure that this was Benjiman Jr for the old Man
Benjiman
moved on to Carroll Co Tn and was probably buried in McLeMoresville, Tn
He stated that all he knew was what his Dad said "Old Benjiman Ladd was
buried there.
To get to the top the ridge, go 91 from Hopkinsville toward Princeton,
turn left on Cerulean-Sink Fork Rd, go until you cross Horse Creek, it
is the first farm on the right and There is a Benjiman buried somewhere on
top of that ridge.

Folks,
To follow is a copy of a letter I sent to John Cato when he requested
opinions on who were the children of John Cato by each of his two wives, Jane
Cook and Elizabeth Nannie. I think it is similar to what what Bonnie has
posted with two notable exceptions. I do not have a son named William and I
do not think that the son George went to South Carolina. George son of John
did not become 16 yrs. of age until 1793 according my study of the personal
tax records of Greensville Co., Va. The man named George Cato (with wife
Judith) in SC received a land grant in SC on Rafting Ck. in Camden Dist in
1786, obviously a much older man than George son of John. His oldest son
George Jr. was born 1765-70 according to a composit of the census records of
1810, 1820, 1830. As I see it the only George Cato we have of the right age
is the George Cato of Northampton Co., NC who sold his land there in 1778. He
was probably born in the 1740's and was a son of the older William of
Northampton Co, who I think was a brother to John the object of this present
discussion.
I have some remarks to make about the William Catos that I will put in
another letter.
Henry Brackin
Dear John,
I think the children of John Cato by his first wife Jane Cook are:
1)- Burwell, died with will in 1769. He has been thought a brother of John in
years past but now I and Bonnie and probably others think he was a son.
He seems to have acquired his first and only land in 1752. His oldest
child Daniel apparently was born about this time. He is obviously much,
much younger than John. There is no occurrence of the name Burwell
(Burrell) in any branch of the Cato family that I know of other than the
descendants of Burwell and of the other children of John and Jane Cato.
2)- Henry, named a son in a deed of gift. I think he married Tabitha Brewer,
daughter of William Brewer.
3)- Mary, married Peter Lee who was given a slave by John Cato.
4)- Sterling, was named a grandson in the will of his grandfather Henry Cook.
I think he married Abigail Brewer, daughter of George Brewer and
Abigail Wyche.
Children by the second wife Elizabeth Nannie are named in the will of John
Cato. The wife Elizabeth is named and the following children:
1)- Elizabeth
2)- Priscilla
3)- Charlotte, m. William Evans (John gave consent)
4)- Crissy, m. John Shehorn (John Cato gave consent)
5)- Jennett, m. William Depree (John Cato gave consent)
6)- John, m. 1st 5/6/1790 Temperance Webb, m. 2nd 5/25/1797 Harriett Perry.
They had 3 sons: George Edwin, Britania and John Wesley. These three,
named as orphans, had Edwin Perry appointed as their guardian in Sumner
Co., Tn. in 1809. Edwin Perry was there as early as 1799. I have not
found record of John there as yet.
7)- George. He is not the George Cato in SC who was much older. He may have
gone to Tn. with John. I have no public records on either after 1798 in
Greensville Co., Va. and Northampton Co., NC.
Henry Brackin
I'm going to type up the important parts of my
worksheets on various Williams here since they are our
main trouble areas. There are a total of 9 early on
in SC, NC, MD & GA:
1. William CATO Sr, 1790 Edgecomb NC
2. ?William CATO Jr, gone by 1800 Edgecomb NC
3. William CATO Sr., of Fairfield SC
4. William CATO Jr., of Fairfield SC
5. William CATO of GA Revolution (lived there at time)
6. William CATO of Chesterfield SC
7. William CATER of Orangeburg SC
8. William CATER of Sumpter SC
9. William CATO of Charles & Prince George Co., MD
First for the known (or at least pretty sure!):
(6) William of Chesterfield - only one who matches
census records for William who m Sarah MASSEY.
According to the birth places given on the later
census, he moved to SC from NC between 1798 & 1803 &
hence is probably not the Willliam in early Kershaw.
Assumed son of Henry.
(7) William CATER of Orangeburg - from the Thomas
CATER line there.
(8) William CATER/CATO of Sumpter - son of George Sr.
(9) William CATO of MD - apparently from George CATO
branch there.
(now for the trouble spots!)
(5) William CATO of GA Revolution - was listed as a
refugee soldier entitled to bounty grant. This means
he was a GA resident at time of the Revolutionary
service according to the book on GA bounty grant
claims. He asked for land in Washington Co. - the
area that Sterling ended up in shortly afterwards so
for right now, I'm assuming him to be Sterling's
brother. This is a guess since we have no proof John
who m Jane COOKE had a son named William. This Wm
would have been b bef 1756 & could have possibly moved
back to VA/NC/SC or where ever he came from (could
also be Wm in Halifax).
(now for the top 4 - urgh!)
I'm going to just type up my latest "think-sheet" on
William of Fairfield & William of Northampton here. I
need later census records on Wm of FF's children (aft
1850):
One or both may be son of William of Brunswick 1733 (b
1712 or earlier) & also in Brunswick 1739. No further
record of him in Brunswick after this.
1749 - by 1749 there is a William in Northampton Co.,
NC. Stays there & in 1772 gives John (for 1 lb) 1/2
land he lives on - signs with an (X). (George in 1778
sells 100 ac of Wm.'s land. Wm got 320 ac grant -160
to John - looks more like 200 to John which John
sells, also in 1778). This Wm could either be brother
of John from Brunswick (the one b bef 1713) or son of
John (& if so, b ca 1730 or so).
1759 - Wm Jr of Fairfield born.
1772 - (William of Fairfield with will 15 years old
here) Same year Wm (X) "gives" John land (1/31/1772),
a William (Sr) appears in Fairfield Co., SC, where he
buys land from Thomas PARROTT (8/8/1772 - 400 ac Lick
Creek). William of Halifax still in NC until after
1790 census so not the same person. Also, 300 ac
Branch of Little River, Fairfield. This John b 1751
or bef.
1774 - Wm 100 ac Bear Creek, Fairfield.
1775 - Wm in Revolutionary service with Thomas PARROTT
- captured - released - rejoined. According to Andre,
there was another William in the service at the same
time. (Wm Jr. 18 here so could be him.) Fairfield.
1778 - Wm "signature", John (& Rebecca) & George sell
land of Wm Sr.'s in Northampton (don't know where
George got his). Wm. sells to John HATHCOCK.
(Apparently same John HATHCOCK who sold property in
Fairfield SC in 1785 & was originally from Brunswick
Co., VA.)
1784 - Wm Jr of Fairfield living with PEARSON family
1785 - Wm "of Fairfield" gets 112 ac on Hanging Rock
Creek (sells **1803** - this date important). James
PURDY sells 184 ac in 1801.
1786 - Wm 400 ac Terrible Creek, Fairfield or
Newberry. Wm Jr marries Susan ECCHOLS this year,
also.
1795 - Wm 434 ac on Lick Creek & Addison Branch laid
out to *Stephen Francis CATO (Wm Jr's son Stephen
Francis CATO b 1787 so only 8 yrs old here. Land SW
of Wm's land. Wm Jr. 39 years old here. (Side note:
Both Stephen CATERs in SC dead here.) If Stephen were
a twin, why not give 1/2 to each son? How could 8
year old get land? Why does the Stephen in Halifax
disappear after 1790 census? Why does Stephen in
Halifax's census match William in Halifax's which, in
turn, matches Wm Jr's in Fairfield? (Looks like Wm Jr
moved his brother from Halifax in with him, leaving Wm
III there.)
1806 - Mrs. KEETOR mentioned in Halifax, NC deed w/
land adjoining LOCKHART, TURNER, DAY & BULLY - people
making deed from Northampton Co.
1829 - Wm Jr dies.
- ------------------------------------------------------
Preliminary conclusions:
The Wm Sr. in Northampton Co., NC, appears to be the
same Wm as in Fairfield Co., SC & probably either son
or brother to John who m Jane COOKE.
The Wm Jr in Fairfield appears to be the son of Wm Sr
of Fairfield. Also John & George appear related
closely to Wm Sr.
This leaves the children of Wm in Halifax/Edgefield as
ambiguous. The Stephen in Halifax/Edgefield *appears*
to be the only one who Wm Sr could have deeded the
land in Fairfield to & also seems to have Wm's family
living with him & census got him (Wm) 2X. The Wm in
Mongomery, Telfair & Coffee Co, GA was b 1780-90 in NC
- too late to be the Wm in Halifax in 1790. However,
it appears that Wm's sons have moved out by 1800 &
he's left with one dau. living at home. One of his
sons fits the profile for the Wm who m Lucy IVEY (in
Wilkes Co. GA). The same IVEY family is from the same
area in both places. By 1798 Wm (Jr?) in Wilkes Co.,
GA.
The Wm early on - living in Washington Co., GA when
Rev. started appears to be a brother to Sterling. We
know the Wm in Mongomery Co., GA, wasn't Sterling's
because he doesn't appear on the fight over the
estate. The Mongomery Co. Wm could be his, along with
the Henry CATO who had an orphan in Emanuel Co. In
Burke Co., GA 1820 there is a widow by the name of
Jinny CATO living who could be the widow of Wm.
Unfortunately, I don't have the full census info on
her. Wm of Montgomery Co. named a son John & a dau
Ginsey (nickname for Jane). His son Cauder named
children Polly Ann (her grandmother's name), William,
Susan, Prissa, Jane. We know Sterling moved to GA in
fall of 1789. If this Wm were Sterling's brother,
that would make the Wm in Northampton, NC, John's
brother.
Comments welcomed!

Hi John!
I'll give you the kind-of "standard" I'm working off
of right now until something comes up to prove or
disprove the following (my opinion may not fit with
others so if anyone else has info, please post!):
John m. Jane COOKE had at least the following top 3
children & then possibly the last 2 or more:
1. Henry b bef 1736 m Tabitha BREWER? VA>NC>VA>SC>KY
2. Mary b bef 1737 m Peter LEE & moved to NC where she
d
3. Sterling b bef 1745 m Abigail BREWER VA>GA>AL
5. ?Burwell b bef 1740, d 1769 m Judith ?WALTON?
4. ?William?
John m Elizabeth NANNY - assuming this is Elizabeth
NANNY CATER mentioned in father, John Wyatt NANNY's
will in 1786 & this is John CATO with will in 1788 who
names John, *son of brother Daniel*, as executor &
names following children in his will (so these are
definate children of this John):
1. Priscilla
2. Charlotte b bef 1770 m Wm EVANS
3. Crissy b bef 1780 m John SHEHORN
4. Jennett b bef 1782 m Wm DUPREE
5. John b bef 1772 m Harriett PERRY d ca 1800 (chidren
>TN)
6. George b bef 1772 (??m Judith d ca 1821 VA>SC)
As far as reasoning, for John CATER/CATO m Jane
COOKE's children:
(1) Henry is easy as a son because John & Jane give
him land as "son".
(2) Mary's husband, Peter LEE, recieves negro from
John as "son-in-law" & she (listed by name) & Peter
LEE sell land in VA so she too is a definate.
(3) Sterling is mentioned in Henry COOKE's will as a
grandson & since Jane was the only dau of Henry
COOKE's that we know m a CATO/CATER, we assume
Sterling was also John & Jane's. Also, Jane is not
mentioned in Henry COOKE's will whereas other married
daughters are so we assume Jane is dead by 1774.
(4) Burwell - I feel fairly confident about Burwell
being the son of John because Burwell's son, Daniel,
would have been born at about the right time to be
John's grandson. Also, Burwell signed his will on Feb
11, 1769 & 7 days before this, John gives son Henry
land. Burwell died bef Sept 25th so I'm assuming he
was sick or had been hurt or something when he wrote
his will (in other words, knew he was dying). To me
it would seem logical that brother Henry would want to
be around in a situation like that which *may* explain
John giving Henry the land at that particular time (of
course this is speculation only on my part!). Henry &
George also name sons Burwell, along with Burwell's
son Daniel, so the naming pattern fits here. There's
also been speculation that Jane may have been John's
2nd wife & Burwell, Henry & Mary may have been from a
previous wife. Jane recieved land in 1741 from her
father & was m to John at this time but the land may
have been a dowry. If we assume that Henry CATO was
named for grandfather Henry COOKE, however, this would
not work since we know Henry CATO was b bef 1735.
(5) William is the tricky one here! There's no proof
whatsoever that John ever had a son named William
except for the fact that there are SO many Williams
running around that one may have been his!
I'll get into the Williams in a later e-mail.
As far as Tabitha's last name, BREWER is what seems to
be the most popular right now, however(!), there's no
proof either way & I'm currently tracking HORTONs just
to see if anything shows up there, as is Cynthia,
another researcher on the list. The HORTONs have
several names running through their line which match
several of Henry's grandsons (example Wiley,
Claiborn..). I thought at first that Henry's sons
must have married HORTONs & that would explain it (one
did), but then Wm. CATO who m Sarah MASSEY also has
Claiborn & Wiley as his sons & he's a son of Henry.
Other names match also but they're common names.
As far as John m Elizabeth NANNY, the reasoning behind
this being the same John who m Jane is that in his
will he names John, son of brother Daniel as executor.
The only Daniel (that we know of) old enough to have
a son who could be the executor is Daniel Sr. who m
Patience.

Dear List,
In the hopes that I am not asking something that has been requested
before, I submit a question to help me clarify this.
Who were the children of John and Jane and who were the children of
John and Elizabeth Nanny? Any reasoning why they are would be helpful.
I have just confused myself trying to figure this out.
Also, what is the consensus of the List as far as the last name of
Tabitha, who was Henrys wife (Henry being the son of John). I realize
that there are differences of opinion and I hope that I am not being
redundant with these questions that have been debated back and forth on
the list.
John
I am looking for info on the family of Nathaniel
Charles Cato-no birth date, possibly @ 1820-47 as latest date. He
married Jan. 3, 1867, (possibly his first marriage) to Sarah Elizabeth
Bottoms Walker-her 2nd marriage. His family would have been from around
Fayette County, GA, as he served almost the duration of the Civil War,
having enlisted as a private in Company I,10th GA Volunteer Infantry,
Fayette Rifle Greys or Fayette Grey Guards, from Fayette & Campbell
Counties. He served under Captain Young Wooten or Wooten Young. He
served with his wife's brothers, Francis Marion Bottoms & George W.
Bottoms. This may be how they met. Nathaniel Cato & wife Sarah Bottoms
Cato moved to Cullman County, AL shortly after the war, he suffering
from left over wounds. Children of this union were:
Laura Josephine-b.12-24-1867, Marion M.-b
3-6-1869, Hyram Thomas Alonzo-b.8-18-1870,
Martha Elizabeth-b.11-1-1872, Cora Idella-b.
1-30-1875, Cordelia Clyde-b.11-4-1876,
Belzora May-b.2-13-1879, Lois Idessa-b. 5-13-1881, Robert
Lee-b.12-12-1883
Nathaniel C. Cato died on 5-8-1907
Sarah E. Bottoms Cato died 10-24-1924
Their daughter Laura Josephine Cato is our line. She married John
Richard/Russell Vawter.
Their daughter Nora Josephine Vawter continued this line etc..
Any info on this Cato family would be appreciated!
