Bonnie,
Things do not look good for our finding Henry and Sterling Cato, et
al in Cumberland Co., NC. The film I ordered on tax lists, land
enteries and Grantee- Grantor indexes came in. I have searched the
following numbered films: 0018682, 0018683, 0018689. I did not find
any Cato listings.
Maybe we are looking on the wrong side of Drowning Creek. The other
side was Anson Co., NC at the time frame involved. That is not good
since it had a big fire and a lot of records have been lost. I am
ordering Abstracts of Early Records by McBee film, # 1307613; Court
of Pleas and Quarterly Sessions, Minute Dockets 1771-1777, film #'s
0018165 and 1689093; Index of Grantors C-D film #, 0018126 and Index
of Grantees C-D, film # 0018135. Here's hoping.

Hi Cynthia & others!
First of all, Cynthia, We need some land or probate records from Halifax
Co. for 1790-1800. Stephen seems to have died between this time &
hopefully left something to show who got his estate. I feel that
William went on to Wilkes Co., GA, - this would be after 1800 - & Gloria
has now furnished a little tidbit of proof! William would have also
sold out to move to GA so land records from 1800-1812 should have
something on that. (We know William was in GA by 1813, prob. bef.
1810.)
Gloria has brought up an interesting coincidence in the Halifax/Edgecomb
question... She's wondering if there's any way that the Stephen &
William might have been the same family, counted twice:
Stephen 2 w m 16+, 2 m under 16, 4 f
William 1 w m 16+, 2 m under 16, 4 f
I agree that it's odd - I wonder if there's any way they could have been
counted twice...
Her further notes on William of Halifax (this really seems to me to
prove which William in GA this was!):
"I found an interesting ref. yesterday at the library in 'North Carolina
Taxpayers 1701-86' by Clarence E.Ratcliff (1984): Edward CATER, Orange
Dist. 1755.
In the same book I found Charles IVEY, on of Anthony 1771 FWV (Franklin,
Warren, Vance Counties) -- right up there beside Halifax, etc. Remember
William CATO of Wilkes Co., GA... Lucy IVEY was one of the legatees in
Wilkes Co. of the estate of Allama IVEY, **Anthony IVEY**,
administrator. A Charles CATOE was in that family in 1830. Sounds like
the Wilkes Co. family was part of that NC line -- William, Stephen, or
Francis??"
Gloria also has some thoughts on the K spellings (Keetor, etc.):
...I noticed in my Brunswick Co. info from Deed Book 8, p. 279, that
James KEETER was named in a poll list for the election of Nathan EDWARDS
Dec. 2, 1768. My recollection is that I found mid-later 1800 deed
transactions for spelling with K, & I think a James KEETER had a Norfolk
Co., VA will in 1790s. It would appear to me that this family continued
to spell their name with a K which means probably no direct connection
to our CATOs after 1730 -- surely they were part of the early ones.
More later!

Looking on information on a Clara Cato who married Peter Cole, in or near
Washington Co., Al. Clara's daughter, Flora Ann was born in 1837, and Clara
supposedly died in 1841. I "inherited" this part of my family tree, so the
details are sketchy, but I would appreciate any help possible.
Thanks,
Sherry
from book: Allens of the Southern States, by Miller:
p 300: Chapter entitled Reynold Allen of North Carolina
"Reynold Allen had land grants and deeds recorded in Granville, NC in 1752
and in Johnston Co from 1753 until 1770, when his land fell in the newly
formed Wake County. His name was generally spelled Renals, Runnels or
Runnells in the earlier records..." ........
"It is not known where he was born or who his parents were." ...
"Reynold Allen was born by or before 1730." ............
"Deed: 1759. Tabitha Keeton of Johnston Co, widow, deeds to Runnell Allen
of Johnston County 220 acres of land on Richland Creek. (Jo Co DB, p
40)".........
(we have this)
p 302: "Tabitha KEETON, a widow, who sold land to Reynold Allen in 1759,
may have been his daughter. Records of Wake and Iredell Counties show that
John, Peter and William KEETON were entitled to an interest in the estate
of Reynold Allen Sr. Mr. Robert Daniels, an Allen family researcher,
states that John, Peter, and William were sons of Yerby KEETON."
"Iredell County NC was formed in 1788 from a part of Rowan County. The
names of many former Wake Co residents appeared in the early deed records
of Iredell includiing Reynold Allen, Arnold Bruce, Peter Eli Bruce, Drury
Allen and PETER E. KEETON. " ..... ie......
1796 Reynold Allen deed from Peter E. Keeton, land on South Yadkin River
adj James Sharpe. Wit: A. Bruce and _ Gill. (Iredell Co DB C, p 112).
16 April 1805. Indenture between Peter Eli Bruce of Iredell, NC, and
Reynold Allen Jr of same. For $350 good money to Reynold Allen Jr. all
right, title, claim or interest which he hath of, in and to the property or
estate of Reynold Allen Sr, together with all the rights or interest which
he hath or suppose he hath unto a certain negro woman named Sylvia and her
issue, now in possession of Reynold Allen Sr. ...Whereas the said Peter E.
Bruce hath heretofore agreed and obligated himself to make equal dividing
of claim which he had to said woman and her issue at the death of said R.
Allen Sr between himself, John KEETON, Peter KEETON, and William KEETON
...said Peter E Bruce and Reynold Allen Jr agree that this deed shall in no
way operate to injury of the claimers of the said John, Peter and William
KEETON...all rights which Peter E Bruce may have as heir at law to said
Reynold Allen Sr by will or in case of deeding of gift being valid in law,
one fourth part thereof and all interest rights by law ...fairly and
without reserve sold and conveyed unto the said Reynold Allen by those
present and the said Peter E. Bruce. Wit: Jas Campbell, Jurat and Jas
McKay. (Iredell Co DB E, p 777.)
...The exact date of the death of Reynold Allen Sr is not known. ....The
deed records prove that Reynold Allen Sr had two sons, Young and Reynold
Allen Jr, and a "son" (son-in law) Peter Eli Bruce. The indenture cited
above also mentioned John, Peter and William KEETON as owning a share of
the estate of Reynold Allen Sr, so it is believed their mother was TABITHA
KEETON, and that she was the daughter of Reynold Allen Sr. "
(( I have not checked out Wake Co or other deeds re: this Keeton family
yet. All this makes me wonder whether the Henry Caton who witnessed the
Allen deeds 1767 in Johnston Co was a child of Tabitha Keeton? ))
All is going fairly smoothly here in Raleigh, except that it seems to be
taking me a longer time than usual to find things. Don't know exactly
why. Library is very nice, and so are the librarians. I love the honor
system copy machines: they have no meter, so that you can copy all day and
pay when you are finished. Haven't seen this in a while.
Could someone please remind me: What exactly am I looking for re: Cato in
Halifax County? I have left my notes re:" needed in Halifax" at home, and
my brain is not working properly. I see lots and lots of Carters,
including Jesse, Francis, William and Sterling c 1798-1804. Plenty of
Keeters in cemetary records, but all late (no pun intended!) A Jesse
Keeter 1803, Mrs. Keeter 1806.
Have not had ANY luck finding Henry yet. But am not at all discouraged
(at least, not yet!) Will post more from NC when I get a chance.

court.
In 1711, land was granted to Coll Edw Hill for transportation of a large
group of people, including William Cater. (Hill must have saved up his
headrights in order to get a larger piece of land.)

Just got an interesting e-mail & wanted to know if anyone knows anything
about this. I'm not sending the whole message, only a small part for
obvious reasons!
"...there was a story told to her when she was younger that a Cato
ancestor once ran a brothel in Huntingburg, IN which is where she is
from..."
Anyone ever heard anything about this?

Whew! I don't know where to start here without typing Gloria's letter
in full! As an introduction to you who don't know Gloria, she is a
long-term Cato researcher & a brain & a half! I've been sending her
batches of printed out e-mail from the list for about 2 months (she's
not on a computer YET, but I'm hoping!!) Anyhow, I just recieved a 7
page letter from her about the e-mails that's wonderful! I'm going to
send her notes, one state at a time. I'll try to send you the gist of
it without re-typing the whole thing, but she's added some wonderful
thoughts to many of the lines (the following quotes from letter or
abstracts):
GEORGIA NOTES:
Corrections to the GA chart:
Under Butt Lee Cato - Katie Lena Cato m. Leroy Benj. Cole; Betha Arrena
Cato m. Lee Roy Bigham. Green Cato's dau., Emily, was not the Emily who
m. Luamber May. We think Green's Emily died early - the only mention of
her is in her father's will. The Emily Cato who m. Laumber May was
instead the dau. of James Cato of Washington Co., GA, son of Francis &
Ailey Cato. The Daniel Dowdy with a ? on the chart married Lucinda
Cato, a dau. of Benjamin & Julia Cato of Dooley Co., GA.
In effort to identify Lucinda A.B.Cato who died in Hancock Co., GA, 1835
ordered film #022538, Powellton Baptist Church. 1799 membership list
has James W.Cato & Lucinda Cato (assuming man & wife). Thinks James was
son of Starling & Abigail; moved to AL by 1810 & buying & buying land
when Starling & Wyche were. He & wife Lucinda died & dau. Lucinda
A.B.Cato (does the A.B. stand for "Abigail Brewer" after her
grandmother??) was sent back to Hancock Co. to live with some of the
BATTLEs. The 1799 Lucinda was prob. a BATTLE. I found the BATTLE
family very involved with the Powellton Bapt. Church; 'The Battle Book'
says that Jesse BATTLE (son of Jesse, & grandson of Benjamin) married a
Miss CATO; they had a dau. named Lucinda BATTLE. Tabitha (WOOTEN,
ALEXANDER, CATO) & James Alexander's dau. Bethia, married Reuben Taylor
BATTLE; Reuben was executor of Lucinda CATO's estate. Confusing --- I
really think we can make the 1810 AL James CATO a son of Starling &
Abigail.
I also think Blount was the son of Starling & Abigail. Mentioned in
some land transactions with Sterling & moved to AL at about same time.
I had made a notation on my CATO records sometime ago that I thought the
George CATO who was in Wilkinson Co., GA was from the family in
Claremont, SC, in 1800. This seems to agree with Dr.Bracken. The
Georgia George must have been a son of George Jr., of SC.
Some BREWER info from the BREWER books from Sally Hardy:
John BREWER filed guardianship reports for his younger sister, Abigail,
last in 1770 in Brunswick Co., VA. She must have reached majority
which, if age 21, would mean she was born 1749-50. We guessed that
Sterling, son of John & Jane was born by 1748. Since there was no
reference to the husband of Abigail in the guardianship returns, they
probably married after that report was filed. This computes with the
theory that Green was born between 1770-1775. It also means the
ORIGINAL Sterling married Abigail & was the father of Green, Blount,
Wyche, Lewis, James & Phillip.
(Note from Bonnie on the above! I'd say that Gloria's notes on Sterling
pretty much puts final touch on Sterling in GA indeed being the son of
John m. Jane. I'm currently awaiting some records from Miss. to see
what's said about the James there & see if it might be the same one as
was in AL. I'm reserving my opinion, once again <grin>, on this one
until that info comes in. (She's probably going to be right though!) I
also have some deeds I've just pulled from Clark Co., AL, that I'll send
in a bit - I haven't had a chance to read them yet!)

Hi Cuz!
Yes, I've been working on it very meticulously this past week (& am not
finished yet!), but keep coming up confused! Let me try to show you
what I mean! First of all did you see the timeline I sent on Henry Sr.
(m. Tabitha) to the list? The most important thing off of that is the
fact that he was in SC from the mid 1770s through about 180- (not sure
EXACTLY when he went to KY <grin>).
Anyhow, a timeline on Sterling, Henry Sr's son, shows:
1785 - 640 ac Lynches Cr./Black Riv., Camden, SC - land adj. Henry's
1792 - witnesses deed Lancaster Co., SC
1797 - mentions his property Lancaster Co., SC
1810 - 200 ac Muddy Fork Riv., KY
1811 - 100 ac Ford River (same as Richard)
1814 - 176 ac Muddy Fork Riv., KY (same as Richard)
1815 - Tax Record in Missouri w/ James
1830 - is dead by this point - assumed - not on MO census.
Now, for his (Sterling's) census:
1790 SC [ 1800 SC [ 1810 KY (+ trying to fit names)
Sterling (1755-60) [ Sterling [ Sterling (50-55 years old here)
wife of Sterling [ wife [ wife
- [ - [ Nathan COULD be here b. 1778 SC
Needham (next door) [ [ Needham prob. here b. 1781 SC
f (1774-90) [ f (1774-84) [ f - married b. ca 1783
m (1794-90) [ m (1784-90) [ Richard b. 1785 SC
m (1794-90) [ m (1784-90) [ Louis b. 1786 SC
[ f (ca 1790) [ Tabitha
[ f (1790-00) [ Betsy
[ f (1790-00) [ f
[ m (1790-00) [ m (1784-94) James b.1796
[ m (1790-00) [ m (1794-00) Sterling Jr. b. 1797
[ m (1800-10) Ransome Sr.
[ m (1800-10) ??maybe William??
Now we have a dilemma... actually a couple of them!
First & foremost, Henry Sr.'s SC census in 1800 only allows for 1 male
under 16 (b. 1784-00). This SHOULD be Henry Jr.!
HOWEVER, Henry Jr. (KY & MO) says on the 1850 MO census that he was born
in NORTH Carolina in 1786 ... ???? Both Henry Sr. & Sterling were in
SOUTH Carolina at that point & Louis was also b. in 1786 in SC. I'd
really like to say that Henry Jr. is the male shown on Henry's SC
census. (It would make sense this way!) I'm just not too sure what to
make of the NC reference!
The third problem I'm running into is the John shown on the tax roll of
KY in 1810 (so prob. b. bef. 1792). If you look at Henry's 1810 census
in KY, you'll see that he has 1 f 16-26 & a m under 10. I don't think
this male under 10 is his. Henry was b ca 1735 & would be 75 years old
here & I don't believe this boy is his. There's a slight "chance" this
female could be John's widow, along with her son. I want to look at the
Cumberland info before I say anything else on this!!! John could also
possibly be a son of Nathan - one way or another, I suspect he died in
Kentucky prob. around 1810 or maybe a little later. We do know that
he's not the Eliz. shown there in the tax roll's husband since she's
listed as the widow of John in 1809 & hence was John, the son of Daniel
Sr. in VA's, wife. The John on the 1810 tax roll might also have been
an older son of Henry's & MIGHT be the John who was in jail in
Cumberland Co... Hopefully those records will tell us something!
This leaves a final tally of the children of Sterling as:
Nathan, b. 1778 SC (good chance he's Henry's, but he sure fits nicely!)
Needham, b. 1781 SC (goes to Ark. & is there with James in 1830s)
female, b. 1783 SC
Richard, b. 1785 SC (dies in Missouri)
Louis, b. 1786 SC (dies in Missouri)
Tabitha b. 1790s SC (one of these females may be Henry's, prob. here!)
Betsy b. 1790s SC
female b. 1790s SC
James b. 1796 SC (in Ark. with Ransome in 1819)
Sterling b. 1797 SC (ends up as neighbor to Needham in Ark.)
Ransome b. 1800-10 SC (d. early in Ark.? - other Ransom is son of Jas.)
male b. 1800-10 (very unsure of this... still working! And yes,
Dr.Henry, Claiborn WOULD fit here <grin>!)
I'm still working, but this is what I'm looking at right now.
Gotta run!

The Cato institute is a non profit group that you can join as a
sponsor, founded in 1977 to develop and promote public policy options
consistent with limited government, free markets and individual
liberty. The management and directors of the Institute believe that
there are fundamentally two ways to order society. One is coercively,
through the mechanisms of the state and the other is voluntarily,
through peaceful interaction of individuals, organizations and
associations. It believes it is advocating Jeffersonian Democracy,
attempting to follow Jefferson's lead when he said "good government
shall restrain men fron injuring each other, which shall leave them
otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and
improvement, shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has
earned." It has promoted the privitizing of Social Security, has
produced studies making a case for abolishing the income tax and the
IRS and funding government with a federal retail sales tax. Of cource
this is very much opposed by the big spenders who want to
redistribute the wealth and call the sales tax a regressive tax. In
general the Cato Institute wants to downsize government. It is their
opinion that much of what the Federal Government has been undertaking
in recent years is illegitimate. If you are interested in more

Re: the John CATOR in England that I sent earlier to the list. This is
the info from the book that I had asked for. Helen Robinson kindly
looked this up for us!
The book - Stoke Ferry the Story of a Norfolk Village, by Doris E
Coates, gives the following information on John Cator.
Cator - John page 104 - After 1736 received part of the land
bequeathed to the poor by Jane Forby in 1711.
Forby - Jane page 104 - In 1711 Jane of Wretton left 5 acreas, 1
rood, 23 perches of land to the poor in her will.
Hope this is of some help.

Bonnie,
I know a lot of people are of the opinion the we are named after some
Romans lost in the British Isles, but I have another version of the
origin
of the name.
My daughter Amanda attended school at the University of Edinburgh,
School
of Celtic Studies. One of her professors there and I became good
friends.
I was over there researching for about 3 months and he was kind enough
to
offer some advice.
There a quite a few Catto names around Scotland. This professor, Dr
John
MacGuinness, is a linguist and published historian and renowned expert
in
Celtic Studies. one of our conversations one day led to my name being
Cato.
He had this to offer.......He said the name Catto was ancient, that it
came from Cattech (the Cat Clan) and was Pictish in its origin. The
Picts
pre date the Romans.
I just thought you might be interested!.........Judy

Bonnie,
Please feel free to forward the info.
The Cattos spread all over the Isle, The first head of the Clan
Chattan's
name was Gille Chattan, his daughter married a MacPherson and that's how
the MacPherson's became the head of the Clan.
Chattan is pronounced "KAH TAHN"
Cato over in Scotland is pronounced KAT (like the feline) OH and the OH
rises on the end.
Be my guest!!!..........Judy
(Note from Bonnie! The OH rising at the end must have been what I
"heard" as "OR" in my phone conversation with the operator in Scotland.
Very interesting history on the CATTO, CATTECH & CHATTAN spelling,
eh!!!)
Many times we take things for granted and are not appreciative of what
we have. I would like to thank all of you that post to this list and
have gone a long ways to providing all of us with info about our
cousins. I have not contributed much because I do not have a lot to
contribute, but I am learning a tremendous amount of info. I have not
seen info to as far as my G-Grandfather, but I know that I will find
it. I have also gotten a lot of info from a relative and will be
posting it as soon as I decide what is relevant to this discussion.
Thanks, Bonnie, for all the work that you do on the lists and
maintaining the web sites and pages. Thanks to all the others that
contribute and research.

I had spent some time searching the list archives in Europe & the UK &
found a couple of little things (I can send a copy of the orig. e-mail
to anyone who wants it):
----------------------------------------
...1870 U.S. census for College Springs, Page County, Iowa...I was
amazed to find name after name of people born in Scotland or
Ireland, and many others had S-I-born parents who had traveled through
PA and/or OH to Iowa...Names appearing were (as spelled on census):
Armstrong, McDonald, Conan, Farquer, Davison, Craig, McClarnen, Bennett,
Ragan, Berry, Rogers, Dunbar, McInarney, Orr, Cato, and a couple others
that I could guess at. Kennedy and McKinnon also appeared, altho without
obvious S-I birthplaces.

Would anyone have informationof Philip Wadsworth May 20, 1835 at Berrick
Salome, Oxfordshire he was married to Anne Cato, March 19, 1835 at
Abingdon Birkshire, Scotland. I'm searching for their parents an any
syblings. Please replay to http://KELLIE_STEPHENSON@bc.sympatico.ca

Dear Chris, I do 1851 Census lookups for Jersey, do you want me to look
anything up for you?
If it is a common surname at that time, I am afraid that I do not have
time to type up loads of names, so if you can let me have christian
names
and approx. ages, I will then see what I can do.
The following names you have given are very common at that time so the
above will apply:-
GALLIE, VARDON, LE BRETON, CATER, LE COCQ, KING, TOUZEL
If you want details of any of your other surnames mentioned I am happy
to
type up all of what is in the Index for that name.

(I asked for info on John Cator on this one!)

...I am trying to find any descendants of JOSIAH ORAM who was born in
Ratby, Lei and died in 1858 in Coventry. He married MARY BURBERRY at St
John's Church, Coventry in 1739. His will was proved in London 9th
Sept,1758 before one of the Doctors of Law of the Perogative Court of
Canterbury. I understand that wills were proved in the PC of Canterbury
if the person concerned was a)wealthy or b)owned land in two parishes
Is this right?
He styles himself Josiah Oram of the City of Coventry,
Leatherdresser.....
His wife to have guardianship of son John until he is 21.(I understand
that it was necessary to do this if the wife was to have custody in
those days) His wife Mary & son John were made executors.(If John was
under 21 how could he be made an executor? John was presumably born in
or after 1739, so he could only be 19, maximum when his father made the
will.)
The will was dated 22nd August,1758 and witnessed by Samuel SMITH,
Samuel READER and Joseph CATER.
Mary Oram widow and Relict and John Oram the son were sworn on oath to
administer the will.

Also, saw several by Marion who's on this list & hence am not including
them since we already know about her line! (Thanks Marion!) I'm hoping
some of the above might give us additional places in Europe or the UK to
look.
First of all, thanks John for such a great post! I, also, appreciate
all everyone is doing! This is definately one of the best groups out
there! Thanks to all of you!
As far as the CATO Institute, from what I've seen on it in the
literature written by them & available here at the Texas A & M library,
it is a group dedicated to social & international intrests, especially
promoting democratic solutions (kind-of a humanist approach) to
problems. Yes, definately a high tech "think tank"!.
The institute seems to derive its name from the Roman senator &
statesman, CATO, of old Roman times, however, and not one of the more
current CATO families. (Shucks!)
I second and third what John said. And also please accept my
apologies for not doing yet what I promised I was going to do--and
that is post to the list census records for Cato's living in Kershaw,
Lancaster, and Chesterfield counties in SC. To be truthful I haven't
had the time to do that yet, but I still plan to do it. So please
bear with me. I'm gonna do it, I promise! Just give me a few more
weeks.

I believe the Cato Institute is located in Washington D. C. Does anyone know
if the founder was a Cato, what their work is, etc. It is my impression that
it is some high-tech "think tank." Would like to know more. Nlamesa(a)aol.com

Cater tidbit found in "Capt. Francis Champernowne, The Dutch Conquest of
Acadie & Other Historical Documents" by Charles Wesley Tuttle, Esq., PhD
pg. 292-293...It has already been stated that it is a tradition in the
English branch of the Randolph family that John, a son of Bernard &
uncle of Edward, emigrated to Virginia. There were Randolphs in that
Colony at an early period besides those descended from William Randolph,
who until recently has been supposed to be the earliest immigrant of
that name. One of the descendants of this William, in the present
generation, has united himself in marriage with the English Randolphs.
The Rev. William Cater Randolph, eldest son of the late Rev. Henry J.
Randolph & his wife Frances, eldest daughter of Beckford Cater, Esq.,
married, in 1847, Grace, dau. of the Rev. Herbert Randolph mentioned
above.
(footnotes: The descent of the Rev. William Cater Randolph is as
follows: Robert Randolph of Hammes, Suffolk, m. Rose Roberts of
Hawkhurst, Kent; their son William (b. 1572, d. 1660), by his first
wife, Elizabeth Smyth, was father of Thomas, the poet (b. 1605, d. 1634)
and by his second wife, Dorothy Lane, had Richard (b.1621, d. 1671), who
m. Mary Isham. This William was b. in Warwickshire, emigrated to
Virginia, and died there. William & Mary Isham (b.1687, d.1742) m. Jane
Rogers, and their son William (d.1791) m. Elizabeth Little, whose son
Henry Jones (b.1777) m. Frances Cater, and had William Cater, named in
the text.)
Bonnie,
Look at what I found in the 1820 State Census of Wayne Co., Ms.
Burwell Cato Sr., 2 males, 8 females, no taxables.
Burwell Cato Jr., 2 males, 2 females, 1 taxable (matches the
1820 fedeal census)
Allen Cato 7 males, 2 females, 1 taxable (Federal 1820
census has 8 males and 2 females)
Burwell Cato Sr. 4 males, 6 females, 1 taxable
There are 3 different Burwell Catos in the census, 2 named Burwell
Cato Sr.
What do you make of this? It seems to me that the last Burwell Cato
Sr. with 4 males is Burwell Cato, the Rev. War soldier. Who is the
other one with 2 males and 8 females and who is Burwell Jr.?
Henry
Can anyone help me with this genealogy - my husband's birthday is
Valentine's Day and I would
be thrilled, as would he, to receive new information on his Cator line.
Can you help?
Willing to share what we have.
