Folks,
Just as I feared, my Cato family chart did not transmit with accurate
margins and some of you may have trouble telling what generation in
some instances a person may be in. Therefor to assist you, I have
given numbers to each person that will indicate the generation each
person is in and what his descent is. This will follow. This is all
in one column. However if you put it in a file on your word perfect
or other word processor, you may easily edit it and show it in
outline form. This was written in Word Perfect 6.0.

Adruain:
Would you be kind enough to send me a copy of the MO 1860-1870 census you
mentioned? I originally went to the library and copied those with Cowan, but
I'm now trying to research the women in our family - the CATO and McGEE
lines. Your sending me the census would save me another trip to the library.
Thanks.

Thank you so much for forwarding me your thoughts. I was fortunate enough to
obtain a copy of the book "Lost Family, Lost Cause" and have read it many
times. Your perspective is appreciated. My grandfather spoke often of
Eleanor Ann (Nellie) McGee (daughter of Tabitha Cato and Thomas Jefferson
McGee), and I felt as though I knew her. It has been difficult to understand
how she could have been married to my g-g-grandfather, Richard Dickey Cowan,
Jr. who was in the Confederate Regiment with her brothers; then after he died
several years after the war ended, she married a Federal Lieut. (Thomas
Wallace Kirkpatrick). Her son with RDCowan was named Richard Jefferson Davis
Cowan. This had to cause some disagreement within the family. One of her 2
daughters, Laurainey Cowan, moved to St. Louis, MO by herself. She died
there at the age of 17 - reportedly killed. We've wondered if she moved
there because of Nellie's marriage to the northerner.
Well, thanks again.
Kathryn

Folks,
I have been working on a chart to organize what is the consensus
attitude of the Cato family and have shared it with Bonnie and
Adrunian. Bonnie and I now believe it is appropriate to share it with
every one. There may yet need to make some refinements but I think it
is getting pretty near the truth. Hopefully this will transmit with
the proper margins.

Dr. Henry, could you go ahead & post your latest chart to the list?
I've done a lot of looking over & except for a few minor questions, tend
to agree with most of what you have so far. I'd say it's a good working
copy! Now it's just "details"! (Proving or disproving certain parts!)
I'm trying to tie up some of the loose ends, as I know you & Adruain &
others are also doing. I'm trying to track Ransome CATO, of all people,
right now in Texas. His widow or daughter ended up in Cass Co., Texas &
maybe her story will tell us something. Whichever it was, she married a
LITTLE. We also are assuming at this point that Ransome CATO & Ransome
LADD are somehow, closely related (probably Ransome Cato being the uncle
of Ransome LADD), but I sure would love to PROVE how!

Also, just got back from the Ft. Worth archives & it was a dud! The
only thing I've been able to definately find out is that the DAR
application by Marilou Roach Fair was definately wrong! There is
definately no info on Henry's wife in ANY pension/military records, as
insinuated in her application - as per someone's question to me.
I looked at the original bounty grants for both Nehemiah Cato (in Ark.)
& Warren Cato (in Missouri) & they say nothing more than the published
index says... just the basic military unit info & the township/range
description.
In double checking the originals it also got me thinking, once again,
about Henry Cato of Rockbridge Co., VA again (the New Jersey Indian
one, although listed in the pension as a "free person of color" & giving
his father's race as Catawba Indian & mother as Musteen Indian). What
ever happened to his line? The last of the pensions are showing is that
Wm. Cato Sr. & Wm. Cato Jr., residents of Fairfield, are his heirs...
This is Fairfield, the city in Rockbridge Co., VA, I'm assuming - heaven
help if they meant Fairfield Co., SC!!! (It was filed from Rockbridge
Co., VA, though!!!) Anyhow, this Henry lived in Knoxville, TN from the
time of St. Clair's defeat (need to look this date up! It was after
1791!) until 2 years after he was under Mad Anthony Wayne. (He was gone
between campaigns.) He went to Rockbridge Co., VA afterward. Is there
anyone on this list who descends from them???

Hi! I'm forwarding this to the list from a new Ark. researcher:

Hi
Bonnie,
Thanks for answering so quickly. We are brand new to all this
technology. My father is Travis J. Cato, his father was Luther H. Cato
who lived and died in Greenbriar, Faulkner, Arkansas. Luther's father
was Edward Cato. That's as far back as I have gotten. I have a lot of
names, but I don't know the relationships. I have the Hardin Township,
Faulkner County 1910 Census and my dad tells me that there are alot of
relatives on it, but he doesn't know where they all come in at in his
family. There
were alot of divorces, deaths, and remarriages. I also have the 1900
Faulkner County Census. The main thing I'd like to find out is who
Edwards father was and if they connect to Needham Cato. I had came
across Needham several years ago and wondered about him. You probably
have these census', but if there is anything on them you'd like to know
just let me know. I really do thank you for your
time.
Thanks,
Terry

Everyone say "Yeah"! School has just restarted in Texas!!!
Now, on to other matters! I feel that the Charles Cato who is shown m.
to Ester Husk 1-12-1814 in Montgomery Co., TN in the previous e-mail
concerning early Tenn. marriages is probably the same Charles who shows
up in IL later.
Does anyone have the IL census info? If so, could you please forward it
to the list?
All I have is the 1818 & 20 IL census on this man:
Charles Cato - 199 - White County
1 white m over 21 (1820 census the same except there is 1 servant or
slave added)
1 white person in habitation (probably wife - is this Ester???)
1 white person in habitation (probably child)
1 white person in habitation (probably child)
1 white person in habitation (probably child)
Charles is no longer shown in 1850. He could have d. by then, but we
need the 1830-40 census to see if he's there or to know whether to look
for him elsewhere. We also need a full 1850 census & later data if
possible... :)
The Charles in TN got married in the county next door to both Stewart
Co., Tenn.(beside there) & Christian Co., KY (right under there). My
guess, however, would be that Charles belongs to the Henry/Rufus line
from next door Stewart Co (Daniel, son of Burwell's line). The marriage
date (Jan., 1814) would have been about right to have had 3 children by
1818.
The town of Cato, IN, is now in current Pike Co. (about 35 mi. from
White Co., IL). This is next door to where Dubois Co. now is. (Green,
Isaac, William & John Cato are shown there in 1850.) There is a good
chance it may have been named for the Charles Cato branch, if they were
indeed the ones who settled in that area. Has anyone researched this
area or spoken to someone in the historical society there yet?
There is a George E. Cato (b.1798) shown in 1850 Green Co., IL (FAR SIDE
of IL from White Co., up above St. Louis, MO. Therefore, I know that
George & Charles were not together in IL. (George Edwin Cato is the son
of John Cato who m. Harriett Perry (she was b.1780 in VA) in VA
1797. (George's brother is John Westly & sister is Britania). George E.
is the one who m. Euphamia Rieff in Wilson Co., TN, 12-31-1821, removing
him once again from Charles in locality.)
Can anyone supply the missing census data or any other info that might
prove/disprove the Charles in TN/Charles in IL tie???

Henry
I think Richard Sr was killed at Simeon Cato's house
because Peggy (McGee) Kirk told me and I also have
a note from her when she was helping Ivan McKee do
research for his book, that the acid tongued old Cato
lady that give the Union soldiers a fit on the march to
Pilot Knob was Melvina, Richard's wife or widow. Peggy
had said she had been told all her life that Melvina had
a "sharp tongue" on her. This is just pure speculation
as I have only this to go on.
Later
Adruain
I'm looking for information on Robert Wiley CATO who lived in Chesterfield
Co. or Lancaster Co. in South Carolina. He would have been born somewhere
between 1860 and 1870. He married Annie Rollins and they had 8 children of
which one is my grandmother Lillie Mae (deceased). Does anyone have any
information. I am just starting to research the Cato family.
Henry
I was going to send you the Mo 1860-1870 census or what I have
but I looked on the Cato homepage and Bonnie has the same thing
that I have up there already.
Later
Adruain
unfortunately Madelyn didn't have a birthdate on Daniel Cato only
William Daniel ll.
Henry
Ivan referred me to his cousin Peggy Kirk who is in a nursing home
at Advance Mo. for info on the Cato family last fall. I tell you this so I
can continue with this story. On the bottom of page 57 and the top of page
58 of
the book Lost family-Lost Cause you will notice a name that has survived the
times
is that of a Cato, an acid tongued old lady that must have made many a Union
soldier wish they had left behind. Now you must remember all homes had been
burned and they were marching the widows and children to Pilot Knob
afterwards
which later they decided to turn them loose and they had to get home the best
way
they could which was probably walk. Peggy said that she was pretty sure that
this acid tongued old lady was Melvina (McGee) Cato wife of Richard Sr. Cato
because she had been told all her life that Melvina had a pretty "sharp"
tongue.
This leads me to believe that Richard Sr. was one of the casulities at
Simoens
house. Ivan also said it involved the McGee, Cato and Cowan families ,and he
concentrated on the McGee's because they were his direct descendants.
Ivan also said there was a burn order to "burn them to the ground" I have
requested from him a copy of this burn order so we could share it. He stated
that he would look through his notes and documents and if he could find it
he would make me a copy and send it to me. Ivan said the main reason he
wrote the book was after the war was over and these six boys were marching
home they were captured, blindfolded and shot and he wanted the world to
know that. There were only 500 copies of the book and I have requested to him
to have it republished but he says he is too old and he got his point across
and made several people mad around Bollinger Co. because he mentioned several
of their "heros" in the book.

Folks, I noticed after posting my treatise on the Massacre at Simeon
Cato's home that I had used the wrong date for the time of the
massacre. I have rewritten the treatise with appropriate corrections
and added a little additional information on the Cato family. Please
throw away the old one and substitute this one.
In studying the material in the book "Lost Cause, Lost Family" by
Ivan N. McKee on the slaughter of the entire male portion of the
Thomas Jefferson and Tabitha McGee family during the Civil War, I
think I may have recently run across some data that may shed some
light on the massacre at Fort Pillow. I am referring to the massacre
of Daniel McGee and 28 others at the home of Simeon Cato on 2/4/1863.
It may have had an influence on the behavior of troops under the
command of Gen Nathan Bedford Forrest at Fort Pillow and in turn have
influenced the attitude that people, espescially Blacks, have toward
Gen. Forrest today.
It may on first thought seem unlikely that one family could have any
significant effect on such an incident as the massacre at Fort Pillow,
but let me summarize what may be found in this book.
The following family members are principal players on the
Confederate side. They were Simeon Cato, son of Lewis Cato and older
brother of Tabitha Cato McGee; Thomas Jefferson McGee, husband of
Tabitha Cato and their three sons: Daniel, Blair and Hugh McGee. On
the Union side, the principal player is Captain William T. Leeper of
Company B of the 12th Missouri Regiment (Union) which later became
the 3rd Regiment. The Cato's and the McGee's were slave owners and
very active supporters of the Southern cause. The two oldest McGee
brothers enlisted into the Missouri Confederate State Guard in Nov.
1861. Daniel was a Captain and Blair was a 2nd lieutenant. Blair was
seriously wounded in early action and was a non combatant after early
1862. The Missouri State Guard was disbanded in early 1862 and Daniel
McGee's Company became Company C of the 2nd Regiment of the Missouri
Cavalry (Confederate). Daniel was a Lieutenant in the new company.
Hugh at the age of 17 years enlisted into Company C in Feb. 1862. One
month later, Hugh was captured, spent some time in prison, took the
Oath of Allegiance, was released and immediately returned to his old
unit where he remained until the end of the War. According to McKee,
this unit was a part of the forces of Nathan Bedford Forrest in most
of his West Tennessee campaigns and was at times Forrest's bodyguard
unit. There were also 7 Cato men on roster roll of Company C on
10/31/1862, a Sergt. Richard Cato and 6 privates; Wm., Wm. D., James
H., Henry, Lathiel, and Nathan Cato, cousins to the McGee men.
During this time, there was increasing harassment of the Confederate
supporters in Missouri by the Missouri Union Militia and a number of
Confederate Missouri soldiers deserted to protect their families.
Apparently Daniel was one of these and he led a group in guerrilla
warfare against the Union Militia. He became a marked man. On
2/4/1863 the 12th Regiment of the Union Militia under the command of
Captain Leeper ambushed Daniel McGee and 28 others at the home of his
uncle Simeon Cato. Apparently they were seated, unarmed at the time,
and Capt. Leeper stated in a later communication that he had given
the order to take no prisoners. All 29 were killed. It was said that
Daniel McGee was shot so many times that his torso was nearly cut
into two haves. It is not kown the names of the 28 so it is not known
how many were Cato men but a lot of them seemed to have not come back
from the war. I suspect any that who were in Missouri at the time
were killed. The name of William Cato is in dispatches of the 12th
regiment but it is not clear that he was at Simeon Cato's house at
the time of the massacre.
This occurred 14 months before the Fort Pillow massacre on 4/12/1864.
Daniel's brother Hugh was there at Fort Pillow I think, a member of
the 2nd Missouri Cavalry, the bodyguard unit for Gen. Forrest. The
24th Missouri Union Cavalry was there in Fort Pillow. It would be an
opportunity for revenge. It is not hard to imagine that regardless of
the Commander's order, this southern Missouri unit would take no
prisoners when facing their Union counterpart from Missouri. Their
action may have led other units to do so also.
Then to cap all of this off, on 8/10/1864 the 12th Missouri Union
Militia came to the home of Thomas Jefferson McGee, an elderly man of
64 years, murdered him, hid his corpse and it was not found for 2
weeks. They also burned his home. Three days later they came to the
home of Blair McGee and killed him in the presence of his 12 year old
daughter. Finally when Hugh McGee surrendered at a designated
surrender place he and 6 others were shot down before a firing squad
on 5/28/1865. There seems to be no other incident to prompt this
murder of non combants except possible revenge for what had recently
occurred at Fort Pillow. This obliterated this family save for the
females. It is interesting to note that the McGee former slaves would
not leave. They remained and were the chief support for these women
for the next 20 years.
All of this leads me to suspect that the massacre at the home of
Simeon Cato on 2/4/1864 may have led to the massacre at Fort Pillow
on 4/12/1864 which in turn led to the killing of Thomas Jefferson,
Blair and Hugh McGee. Instead of the massacre at Fort Pillow being
primarily racially motivated, it may have been the result of a long
standing feud between Union and Confederate elements of the border
state of Missouri. It seems appropriate if possible to learn what
was the behavior of the 2nd Missouri Cavalry and the casuality list
of the Union Missouri troops at Fort Pillow to substantiate this
theory.

The massacre mentioned on the list today reminds me of a grievance I
have towards a particular Union Army general, who did everything
in his power to hinder my genealogical research. It was almost as
though he said to his soldiers, "Joan's going to want these records,
let's burn the courthouse!"

I have also been told and I am trying to get a copy of this from
whoever told me that William Grimsley was a fellow of prominence
in Wayne and Bollinger co. and was an officer in the confederate
army. The Cato slaves hid major Grimsley under a load of loose
hay and smuggled him past the union army to Arkansas. This is
ironic because in the 1870 census My g-grandfather's little bro.
ends up in Ark. in the household with the William Grimsley family
as an orphan. Then My g-grandfather Ben F. names his first two daughters
after Grimsley's wife and daughter.
Just wanted to share this with you

My great-great grandmother was Sarah CATO b. abt 1839. She had two
sons, John B., b. abt 1865 and Enoch W. Cato, b. abt 1870. I found them once
in the 1870 Alabama census in, I think, Coffee Co. I never copied the page
so I am unsure now. They may also be in the 1880 or 1890 Walton Co. or
Santa Rosa Co. FL census living next to a McGee family but I don't have
access to those census microfilms right now. Perhaps some kind soul could
check for me...
John B. married Sarah M. TAYLOR (often confused with Sarah CATO) 30
Jan 1893 in Walton Co. FL. They had seven children. I suspect John was
buried in Pollard, AL in 1905. Enoch did not marry according to my
information and I think Enoch and his mother Sarah CATO, who also never
married according to family lore, are buried in DeFuniak Springs, Florida.
The family may have been of Native American descent. Does anyone have any
information on this family???
