Henry
Why I think you might be on track with the assumption Of at least
two of the boys in Wayne Co. William 1810 and Benjiman 1820
belonging to Henry or at least being bros. whoever they belong to.
1850 Mo census
Benjiman Cato 30 m ky.
Serilda 1832 18 f mo.
Solutha 7 f mo.
Benjiman J. 5 m Mo.
Mary J 3 F Mo.
William Cato 40 M Ky.
Winney 23 f mo.
Henry 5 m mo.
artamassa 2 f mo
Rebecca 6/12 f mo.
In Bollinger Co I found that in 1852 Benjiman died at 32 yrs of age and his
wife Cirralda and John Virgin were appointed co-executors of his estate.
This left Little Ben an orphan at the age of 7. In the 1860 census little
Ben ends up in the household with William and Winney at the bottom of the
list @15 yrs old.
Based on this I think William and 1820 Benjiman were brothers. Open for
comment.

Hi! I just found this in my old mail - apparently I missed it somehow!

Anyhow, I'd love to hear comments or questions posted to the list.

John seems to have been born at earliest around 1710 to 1720. Daniel
seems
to
have been born 1722-1725. Unless John was married and had a child at a
very
early age (15 or so) which does not seem likely, it seems that John and
Daniel
were brothers.

assumption that John m Jane and the John who dies in
Va are the same. This
may not be so. Prelim comparison of the signature marks
seems to indicate
that this is, in fact, the case. Further research needed.
In any case,
it does not seem possible to me that John m Jane is the same John
who moves
to SC. He would be in his 90's when he is recorded as riding all over
the
state as a minister. Also, Baptist Church records mention his death,
but
make no mention of his reaching a very old age, and it seems to me that
they
would, although maybe not!. Possibly search of Baptist records would
reveal
more about SC John, maybe the name of his wife. I had wondered if
SC John is
the John m to Rebecca in Northampton Co NC records.

On the original census that I found Needham on, the area under white
individuals was blank. The "FPC" was a reference to "Free Persons of
Color" which is on the other side of the census and was used for black
residents who were free (as opposed to the space for slaves). It was
also often used to list people with dark skin, including Indians &
others of questionable race (mulattos). Considering that everywhere
else Needham is listed as white, I don't think he was black. Maybe he
was partly Indian or just very darkly tanned that year!
I'd love to add a copy or an abstract of Benjamin Perkins will to the
CATO homepage if you find it... Would you like to send a copy??

I haven't any record of the name Daniel CATER in my research so far; however that
doesn't mean there's no connection at all - there are some coincidences that caught
my eye.
a) The names HINTON (maybe HINSON?) and WYATT (maybe WEYETT?) do appear in our
family tree.
b) we do have a definite event that connects our family with Barbados. In 1831
Mary BROWN nee CATER died in St Michael Barbados, having travelled there from
Bristol, with a servant. Any further information about that event would be
welcomed.

Marion or anyone else,
Do you have any Daniel's or Henry's in your CATER line? We have some
that show up in Barbados, we're assuming from England. Do any of these
sound familiar?
Daniel Cator
Is listed with 2 servants & 13 acres on the 1679/1680 Barbados Census in
St. Joseph's Parish (does not list how many people live in the
household; only number of servants/freemen/Negroes) (From "Ommited
Chapters from Hotten's Orig. List of Persons of Quality...and Others Who
Went From Great Britain to the American Plantations, 1600-1700") Also
listed are: Edward HINSON, Hugh RILEY, Daniel WEYETT, Humphrey POWELL,
Richard ALLIN & William WALKER among around 70 others.
Daniel Cater
(From "Barbados Records Vol. 1 - 1639-1880, Will & Administrations" by
Sanders) Daniel Cater's will. Sept. 18, 1675, RB6/9, p.329 Mentions
Kamperlaine CAMPION; youngest daughter of Daniel SMITH; Elizabeth
CHANDLER; son Daniel Cater; Daniel HOUSE, son of John HOUSE; Roger
GARNERS?; land in possession of George GARNERS? & John MACKENNY; friend
Henry GALLEP; sold land to John SHADWELL. Signed Daniel (X) Cater,
Witnesses: Kemberlaine (X) CAMPION, Adam STANFORD. Proved Oct. 25, 1675.

Hi Pitter,
I think that maybe you have seen my family on the Northern Cherokee
rolls. My wife is a Northern Cherokee thru her father's line and so are
my children. Are there any other Cato's on the rolls? I would sure
like to know. Do they give this info at the tribal office? I can write
them and request it if they do. This is exciting to know that I am
getting closer to my kin everyday with the wealth of info that I am
getting here.

Hi Adruain,
I have no idea who John's parents are. John and Martha are the only
things that I have to go on. Nathan Nathanial is the only child that I
know about, but have heard that he did have bros and sis's. I am going
to dig a little deeper tomorrow night and see if I have some more info
on this line that I have overlooked. I haven't really been working it
lately. I will let you know if I find anything.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I do have a question I'd like to pose to you.
Do you know of any Cater families in early SC?
The reason I ask is because my Perkins ancestor named a son Cader back
in
the 1790s when he was living somewhere in SC. In a later generation,
another Perkins was given the middle name Cator, making me wonder if
Cader
was actually Cator or Cater. This name is so unusual as a first name
that
one must wonder if it came from the surname of a related or associated
family.
Thus far, I've encountered 3 unrelated Perkins families in southeastern
SC.
All 3 of them had lines in Cheraws District, which was adjacent to
Camden
District, and 2 of them, including my Perkins family, were represented
in
Chesterfield District, formed out of Cheraws in 1798. Chesterfield is
next east to Lancaster, as you probably already know.
My ancestor, Joshua Perkins, had a daughter named Elizabeth; so did one
of
the other Perkins families. But their husbands weren't named Cato,
Cater,
or Cate, so no help there.
Another interesting point is the name Needham, which isn't a common
first
name. There was a Coward family in Cheraws District which had a son
named
Needham. This fellow went to MS where he married a daughter of one of
the
Perkins lines which had moved there from SC. The Cowards and Perkinses
moved on to southwestern LA; my Perkins family got to the same area
before
they did. They all wound up living within 50 miles of one another in St
Landry Parish, LA, just as they apparently had in SC. Some amazing
coincidences in genealogy, eh?!
In fact, we have a whole assortment of coincidences here. Just wonder
if
it's going to turn into something more.
>--------------------------------------------------------
>SC 1790 census:
>Needham Cato - 025 - Lancaster Co. - 00 00 00 00 00
>
> 1 listed under "all other free persons of color"
>-------------------------------------------------------
That "free persons of color" notation is interesting. Could be a member
of
the family or a servant or laborer living in the household. The Joshua
Perkins family is believed to be of part Amerindian or even Melungeon
origin. Such people are often labeled FPC in the old records; in old LA
records, they're even labeled M for mulatto. If the FPC in the family
was
Needham's wife, Elizabeth Perkins, then we may well have a definite
connection with my Perkins family. How we can tell that for sure, I
don't
know; maybe you do.
>From there they have more kids... Now, for the tough part. They were
>apparently asscociated with the Perkins a lot more in the past, but I'm
>still working on THAT - haven't found the ties I need since part of them
>are lost in NC! The Ladd family was also asscociated, & I suspect
>married to my anscestor... Any Ladds in your line?!!
I don't have any Ladds listed. Do you know what part of NC your family
was
in? There was another Perkins family in Bladen Co, NC, which moved to
the
same area of SC where the other 3 Perkins families were and then to
Burke
Co, NC and finally to Carter Co, TN. This family had the same ethnic
background as my Perkins family, and some researchers think it's the
same
family. I'm not yet convinced that it is. One of the other Perkins
families came to Chesterfield District from Rockingham Co, NC (up on the
VA
line). I was recently in contact with one of their descendants who
lives
in Bladen Co, NC. I live in the next county (Cumberland), BTW.
>The name Cato & Cater seem to be intechangable at one time. I've found
>people buying land as a CatER & then later selling as a CatO. The same
>in the wills. One will listed one person as Cater, then Cato, then
>Cate, in the SAME INSTRUMENT!!! These Catos were originally from
>Brunswick/Greensville Co., VA.
The only other words ending in "o" I can think of are potato and tomato,
and the "o" is changed to "er" in southern dialect, i.e. potater or just
tater for short. Don't know if this explanation serves to explain the
shift from Cato to Cater; it doesn't seem to help explain Cate, unless
Cate
was pronounced something like kay-tuh instead of the obvious kayt.

All the information I have on Vincent is that he is the son of Henry
and Tabitha Cato and was born 1765 in North Carolina. Here is an
IGI I ran on Henry and Tabitha.

Hi! I am also "new" to the CATO list. I am a descendant of Vincent CATO and his son, Jesse Cato who married. Easter Hinson.
There seems to be a lot of information on other members of the family, but not much on Vincent. Does anyone have more information than just his children?
My line:
Vincent Cato m. Sophia (Horton???)
Jesse Cato m. Easter Hinson
Polly Cato m. William J. Blackmon
Thanks,
Jan
I, too, come from the dark-haired, brown/green-eyed Cato group in MO. I
don't know how far back this goes, but my g-g-grandfather had what looks
like black or dark brown hair (can't tell eye color & no one knows), but
this trait has come down as far as my dad's generation. My dad looks
like an Indian, and has been mistaken as such, with darker than "normal"
skin, perfectly straight black hair, but green eyes. (If interested in
what I turned out looking like, there's a picture of me on my Rusk Co.
page where it says "About Me"- <grin> - I didn't inherit these traits!)
This would be the Needham/Starling line which was in Pulaski Co., Ark.,
by 1850, and who came from MO.
I know 2 of the William Catos in Georgia had descriptions, which I
always find interesting:
William Cato
Simple larcony, 4 year sentence, March 27, 1819-March 1824,
Montgomery County. Farmer from NC,
1st sentencing. 30 years old, 5' 4 1/2" tall, dark hair, dark
eyes, dark complexion. Pardoned
William Cato
Desertion Notice: (Issue of July 21, 1814). Deserted from Camp
Pinckney on May 31, 1814, William
Cato and Sam GREGORY, privates in the Georgia Militia in the U.S.
service. Cato is about 30 years
old, 5'8" tall, dark hair, blue eyes, fair complexion, and a
farmer by occupation. GREGORY is about
same age, 5'10" tall, red hair, blue eyes, fair complexion and a
farmer. Both are supposed to have gone
to Pendletons Creek in Montgomery County where their families
reside. $20.00 reward for each offered.
