A while back I corresponded with a direct descendant of
Willie Ann Cato, named Gary Murrell address
gmurrell@flashnet he also has a website but I have
misplaced it for the time being.
Gary says William Murrell and his wife Willie Ann Cato
came from Sumner Co. Tn. to Laclede Co. Mo. in the 1830's
and settled in the far Northeast of the county. The Murrell
cemetary is still there today.
Gary says: Willie Ann Cato dau of Roland Cato Sr. who
is the son of Daniel Cato Sr. who is the son of John Cato Sr.
,
who is the son of George Cato. Are we related?
Gary will answer you if you wish to e-mail him.

Folks,
I looked up Charles Cato in the White Co., Ill census records and
found the following:
I820 Charles Cato I male over 21, 4 other whites, 1
servant or slave.
1830 Charles Cato 1100001-001101
I found today in Norfolk Co., Va. an interesting marriage.
7/1/1797 William Walker to Mrs. Elizabeth Cato, Samuel
Walker, sec. Bonnie, do you think that this might be Elizabeth Nanny,
widow of John Cato and the William Walker, possibly the William
Walker that married Jane Cato, daughter of Daniel Cato, in 1786?
I looked at the Ind. 1830 census of Green Cato. The index is wrong.
He was in Duboise, not Johnson co. in 1830.
Henry Brackin
It is a real pleasure to find so much infro on my Cato line ( Roland
Sr.)
by way of Willie Ann who married William Murrell.
They had a daughter named Mariah who married a Eli Rippy and later
went to Missouri (Laclede Co.).
Bob Gibson
Dear Dr. Brackin,
Got your message. Records on my research on Roland, Sr. (I have him born
c1748 and married before 1776) and Polly Powell show the issue:
-- Rolin, Jr.
-- Robert
-- Lucy
-- Green Talbot
-- Wylie (femanle)
-- William
Have not turned up anything on a Dixon yet. Evidently William did not come
to TN, unless someone proves otherwise. (Let me hunt for my information on
Sally. I must admit that it's been a few years since I worked on my tree,
so some of this I have to re-read and hunt through.)
I have a story from the family which brings some of these characters out of
the realm of just names and dates. Robert Allen Cato (son of Roland, Jr.)
had a daughter Sarah, b Sept 10, 1867. Sarah was not a well child, so at
age five, on Jan 20, 1871, she died. Sarah had always been afraid of the
dark, and her father insisted that a light be kept in her room at night.
When she died, Robert refused to allow her to be buried on the hill in the
Cato cemetary, but had her buried in the side yard. Every night for the
rest of his life, Robert Allen Cato carried a lit lantern out to her grave.
Part of the family believes that after Robert died, her little body was
removed to the cemetary, while the rest believe she was kept where Robert
first wanted her. Nevertheless, she lies in an unmarked grave, not at all
what Robert wanted.
Thanks Judith and Cynthia for the continued flow of information on
the descendants of Roland Cato. What happened to Dixon and William,
named in their Grandfathre's will? They are not listed in the
settlement of Roland's estate. Did they die without issue before
Roland died? Was Sally the wife of Drewy Jordan?

If you need a marker for a Veteran you can do the following
Form can be found at VA benefits form
http://www.va.gov/forms/benefits.htm
Or go to your local Veterans Administration office and
obtain form (va form 1995(R) 40-1330) Fill it out and
send it to the address provided on the form. The marker
will be sent directly to you via UPS at no cost. You have
a choice of three flat markers, light gray granite, white marble,
or bronze. Two upright markers light gray granite, and white
marble also available is 1 bronze niche for use if entombment
is in a columbarium or masoleum. You may also choose an
enblem that symbolizes the persons religious belief.
These markers are for all veterans who served their country.
You can put the marker down yourself simply by building
a form 2-3 inches larger than the marker, pour a bag of
quickrete in the form, mix with water and smooth. Wait until
the mix is firm and place the marker in the Quickrete
GOOD LUCK

My great-grandfather, John Wesley Cato lived to be quite old (as most Catos
seem to do), and he loved nothing better than to tell stories to us kids.
Luckily, some of us had the foresight to write down "all that old stuff."
What follows is a timeline based on his recollections. Judith Cato
As you can tell, I'm NOT a great typist, and I promise I'll get on to this
internet thing soon. A big SORRY.
I meant to post:
Roland, Sr.--needs a Revolutionary War marker
Roland, Jr.--War of 1812 marker
According to family oral history, Roland, Jr. was also a member of the
"home militia" during the Civil War. Since Roland, Sr's grave is unmarked,
several of us had in mind to put his Rev marker up on the hill near Roland,
Jr's.
P.S. This was typed by my daughter, Amanda
Thanks, Judith Cato.
I believe that the stained glass windows I have seen mentioned in recent
messages are in a church in Indiana. Lilah Cato (desc of Green Talbot)
mentioned them in passing, and said something about the names of Cato and
Shively being incorporated into the glass. Green Talbot was apparently a
Minister in Indiana, and later Catos sponsored the windows for the church.
Lilah is not available right now, but when she is I will ask her to tell
me more. From, Cynthia Benua

answer to cary froman - yes i have been to the cato cemetary near
jordonia . my cato cousins who all grew up around there--descendants of
john wesley cato and i went there, one cousin tries to keep an eye on it.
it is very over grown, we would love to clean it up, but dont know if we
will invite vandalism. roland needs a revolutionary and 1812 marker.
cousins stanford cato and mildred cato sawyer and i have discussed it. i
don't know anything about stain glass windows--feel sure since they are all
strong church goers and i spent many summers with family in tn i would
have heard or seen--especially since i am a glass artist that does church
windows. i'm sorry to hear about the hyde cemetary. there were also
former slaves (that stayed) also burried there. i have some records on
hyde--simpkins if they will help, later tonight i am going to send out
some personal recollections of my g grandfather , john wesley cato--we all
live into our nineties ( i have about 30 more years to go) and "pap"
remembered nancy vincent---and loved nothing better than to tell us kids
about it, hope this helps. judith cato-----new to the page
Should of read all of my mail first. Is the Cato Cemetary you reference the
one in Nashville in the old Jordonia area?
If so have you visited it? We attempted it about a year ago, but was the
middle of Summer and we were advised against it. One of the years, the Snakes
and such was so bad. We were told it was terribly overgrown. Mrs. Lera Floyd
that Henry mentioned paid to have it cleared about 20 years ago, but was
taken, we understood they burnt what was easily burnt and left the rest. We
hope to visit during cold weather. There is a Cato Cousin whose family still
lives on part of the original Cato Farm, just past the cemetery. If this is
the cemetery you referenced you pass an ornate old church, will have to dig
through records to get the name of the Church, but we were told that some of
the glass windows were purchased by the Cato family, and their names are part
of the windows, but we have not been able to see them for ourselves yet.
Many of the Cato's are buried in the Springhill Cemetery in Nashville, we have
taken pictures of all of the stones we have been able to find, but we have a
few names we haven't tied in yet.
When we were there in the Summer of 1996, we were tracking the Hyde Family
Cemetery, which is also part of our direct line, but the Hyde's had allowed
other members of the area to be buried there. It too had been overgrown for
several years, and we were about 3 months too late. BFI the trash people had
taken it to court and purchased the land. They moved what graves they found,
but from people we talked to, they didn't look very hard, since they were
paying to move the bodies that were found. We talked to a Cato Cousin
residing in Nashville that knew about the move, and said he had asked them not
to destroy the original stones, but when he arrived to pick them up in his
pickup, a backhoe bucket had been used to bust them. We know of several names
that were in the cemetery but were not found. Some of the know names are CATO
HYDE SIMPKINS MANLOVE and probably DRAKE. We spent most of a week tracking
down what information we could dig out of people, and while this had
transpired only 90 days before, we sure got the cold shoulder. A very touchey
subject.
Folks,
I made mistake in my report on George E. Cato in the 1830
census of Sumner Co., Tn. He was listed as 210001-11001, making him
born 1790-00, about the same age as Green Talbott Cato. However I
have found that material in that Cato homepage about the Wilson Co.,
Tn. Cato's. It goes as follows.
John Henry Cato I served in the Rev. War, received 800 acres
of land in Wilson Co., Tn.
John Henry II- a blacksmith in Williamsburg, Va. When he died
John Henry I sent for the Widow Ollie to come to Tn.---- 3 children:
Britania (1800), John Wesley (1803?) and George Edwin, b. 1798 who
married Euphenia in Wilson Co, Tn. 1/1/1822. They moved to Carrollton,
Ill. George's sons Jacob and John Henry III moved to Cato Springs, 4
miles south of Fayetteville, Ark. in 1846.
I am unable to find any evidence of a land grant in Tenn for
John Henry Cato. One thing that seems strange is how someone from
Virginia might receive a land grant in Tenn since Tenn was not a part
of Virginia. I find no land records on Cato except the sale of three
tracts of land containing about 100 acres by George Cato in 1825. I
am unable to find out how he obtained this land They are no estate
records for Cato in Wilson Co. except where George Cato's wife
received a part of the estate of her father Henry Reiff. George Cato
and Euphenia Rieff married 12/31/1821.
George E. Cato is in the 1830 census of Sumner Co., Tn (which
is separated from Wilson Co. by the Cumberland River) and the 1840
and 1850 censuses of Green Co., Ill. I have not had time to read
these censuses. Jacob R. Cato, age 24 yrs., b. in Tn., a wagonmaker,
is in the 1850 census of Washington Co., Ark with wife Lutitia, age
22 also born in Tn. and sons John (5 yrs.) and Joseph (1 yrs). Also
in the census is John H. Cato, age 26 yrs., b. in Tn., a wagonmaker,
unmarried.
So some of this material cannot be substantiated and some can.
I wonder whether the John Henry I might be the John Cato, orphan of
John Cato, dec'd and his wife Judah, named in the will of Sarah
Scott
in Norfolk Co., Va. in 1775. There was also a son George. The John
Cato, husband of Judah, was the son of the Mary Cato that left a will
in Norfolk Co., Va. in 1752, naming her son John, a brother
Christopher Pool and a sister Sarah Scott.
From this it would seem that George E. Cato is not closely
related to Green Cato who married in Sumner Co., Tn. I wondered about
this as it seemed to me more likely that Green Cato who married Rhoda
Alley would have come from Wilson Co. than from the western part of
Davidson Co. where Roland Cato lived. However I read also on the Cato
homepage that Roland's daughter Willie who married Thomas Murrell
moved to Sumner Co., Tn. where they raised 4 children. So it would
seem probable that the Robert Cato that was bondsman in the William
Alley- Judith Street marriage in Sumner Co. in 1812 and the Green
Cato that married Rhoda Alley in 1827 were the brothers to Willie
Cato.
Henry Brackin
From the family bible, we have some dates for the other children that Cary
Froman listed.
Jefferson Davis Cato--b July 4, 1862 d Sept 10, 1877
William Hamlin Cato--b Aug 18, 1864 (no other dates listed)
Sara Cato--b. Sept 10, 1867, d Jan 28, 1811
Hope this info will help fill some holes. Judy Cato
My name is Judith Claire Cato. Greetings from a direct descendant of
Rolland Cato, Sr. My Father is John Louis Cato, Jr, b. TN Oct. 12, 1915.
He is the only child of John Louis Cato, Sr., b Dec 28, 1894. His father
was John Wesley Cato, b Nov. 19, 1867. His father was John Bell Cato, b.
Jan 24, 1846. He was the son of Robert Allen Cato, b Feb. 28, 1822. His
father was Roland Cato, Jr. (b 1783), son of Rolland Cato, Sr. His father
was Daniel Cato. I do hope we will all be able to add branches to our
family tree through an internet relationship.
According to my family's geneaological work, and oral family history along
with records copied from the Cato family bible and the Cato cemetary, Green
Talbot Cato is the son of Roland Cato (Sr.) and Polly Powell b. circa 1748.
Their other children were Roland Jr., Robert, Lucy, Wiley (a daughter) and
William. They were all born in VA.
Hello all,
We have a Davidson Co TN marriage record for Green Cato m Sally Drake dau
of Isaac Drake Aug 25, 1815.
We know Isaac R. Cato son of Green Talbot Cato was born Aug 20, 1823 from
his tombstone in Old Main Cemetary, Indiana.
We know Isaac R. Cato son of Green Talbot Cato was born in Tenn, because
Isaac's son Wm Riley Cato of Indiana states on the 1880 Census that his
father was born in TN.
We know there is a marriage bond in Sumner County TN for Green Cato to
marry Rhoda Alley of Sumner Co dated 1 July 1827.
We know that the Green Cato who married Rhoda Alley in Tenn is the same
Green Cato m Rhoda who appears on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 Census in
Indiana.
It appears that Isaac R Cato son of Green Cato was not the child of Rhoda
Alley. It seems logical that his mother is the Sally Drake m Green Cato
in 1815 in Tenn, but is there any way to prove this?
****Does anyone have a Census record for 1820 in TN for Green Cato? Maybe
it could help clear this up. According to 1850 Census in Indiana, he
was born 1790-91 in Va. So he would be 30 years old in 1820. And if he is
the Green m to Sally Drake in 1815, it seems he might have his own
household.******
As far as proving who Green Cato's father was, I am baffled at this point!
Thanks, fm Cynthia

I would appreciate any info you might be able to share with me on the
Cato family. Does your info lead back to the Cato's of South Carolina?

Hi Cary & thanks for your posting!
You've brought up an excellent question!! I would really prefer not to
see info on living persons on this list unless you have their
permission simply because it might be considered an invasion of their
privacy. Since the information sent to the list is archived, anyone who
wants it any time in the future has access to the information, (although
my understanding is that you do have to be a list member in order to do
this). I use this principal on all my pages also & don't post
information there regarding people who are still alive or even very
recently deceased.
I did make a real humdinger of a mistake once & post information on one
person's recently dead husband & mentioned her name in it as the widow
on one of my pages. She was not terribly happy about it & I didn't
blame her a bit!!! I had cut & pasted her e-mail to a page & forgot to
edit it before uploading the page to my site. Then to add insult to
injury, I had corrected it right before I had my hard drive crash so I
had to use the material I had backed up several weeks before when I
reloaded the page to the site & in all the confusion, guess what showed
up again!!! (I suspect she may STILL think I had it in for her!!!) I
am now *very very* cautious about what does go up in public because of
this!
Thanks,
Bonnie

When we get to sending our information to you, through what generation should
it be sent. On some of the branches we have information down to babies born
last year. Not sure what should be sent, and how does one approach sending
information to this list on individuals that are still living?
Some guidelines here would be helpful.
Appreciate your help.
