At one point I was researching the possibility that one of my ancestors was Daniel Catlin,
born about 1808, who was listed in the 1850 Ticonderoga, Essex County census. The family
moved to Long Lake, Hamilton County (wife Betsy, children Huldah, Phebe and Laura). They
are listed in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census of Long Lake. I eventually realized this was
not the family related to my Cole line, however, for anyone who IS descended from this
family, I came across something that should be of interest. I was reading the June 2006
issue of "Architectural Digest" and saw an ad for an Art Gallery that caught my
eye. It was a painting by Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, painted at Long Lake, Adirondacks, New
York, in 1887 called "Dan Catlins's Home". It's a lovely painting of a
log house, with a hunting dog in the doorway. If I WERE a descendant of this family,
I'd love to know that this painting exists, and that you can probably obtain a print,
or at the least, a photograph of the painti!
ng. Hope this helps someone!
