Wow!
I've just signed on with
ancestry.com and came across your email from 2002. My name is
Elizabeth Whitehouse Manley, my mother was Elizabeth Caroline Catlin. Research shows a
relationship to Thomas Catlin b-about 1600 in Kent, England. In 1630 he married Mary who
beget John Catlin(1640-1707). John married Mary Marshall in 1668 and had Samuel
Catlin(1672-1760. In 1699 Samuel married Elizabeth Norton and had eight children. One of
which was Lt. John Catlin(1703-1768). John was born in CT, just outside of Hartford and in
1731 married Margaret Seymour. One of their son, Alexander, built a house in Litchfield,Ct.
Another son(my direct line)was Eli Catlin(1733-1829). Eli married Elizabeth Wey in 1755
and they had 6 children.
I am trying to find out if Eli and two of his sons, Nathanial and Putnam, fought in the
Revolutionary war and were officers. I am joining the Colonial Dames and they want me to
prove ancestry through the Brodhead line because it is an established line. I, however,
would like to give the Catlin's their just due and establish the name of Catlin as an
acceptable branch to establish membership through. If you have any information regarding
this I would greatly appreciate it.
To finish the connection, Nathaniel Catlin married Eleanor Decker(of NJ), had eight
children, with Nathaniel Catlin Jr. the branch that I follow.Nathaniel
Jr.(1798-1893)married Jane Dingman Brodhead in 1822. They had 4 children. Avery Brodhead
Catlin (1831-1913). He married Lydia Olmsted and had 5 children. Rufus Olmsted, their son
married Caroline Bernsee in 1887 and had one son, John Bernsee Catlin in 1888.John married
Helen Robb in 1920 and had 2 children, Elizabeth Caroline and John Bernsee.
