Do you know if Frances, or any of the Catlin siblings, had a son named Preston?
Preston Catlin was supposed to have been a nephew of George, the painter, but I don't
know who Preston's parents were. Preston may have married a quarter-blood Pawnee
woman and they had a son, Joseph Elmer Catlin (aka: Elmer Joseph Catlin).
Following is part of an original article written auto-biographically by Mrs. Phoebe
Melissa Journey of Max, Nebraska. It appeared on Thursday, February 18, 1937, in
"THE PUBLIC MIRROR":
"George Catlin painted most of the Nebraska pictorial history and has a collection of
over five hundred such paintings in the museum in Washington, DC. It is said that a
nephew, Preston Catlin, married a pretty quarter-blood Pawnee squaw, in Pawnee, Oklahoma.
His son, J.E.Catlin, married my daughter (this would have been Jessa Mae Elizabeth
Journey). Their son, Preston Catlin (father of Ace, Royce, Sydney, Vaughn and Verda Mae),
grand junior, one sixteenth Pawnee Indian, is an engineer on a pile-driver, carrying a ten
thousand pound driving bar on a big bridge gang in Utah. The engineer, like his great
uncle, has a decided talent for painting."
The author, Phoebe Journey, was my great-grandmother's sister, and lived all her life
in Nebraska. I'm trying to find any information about J.E. Catlin - Joseph Elmer -
parents, siblings, or his children.
