Hello Erica
The family are Baptists I think, I found Robert William's
burial at Brunswick Chapel,Bristol and some of his children were baptised at
Castle Green Independant Bristol.
Is there any way of finding Chilcompton Parish records?
I think Robert's father is the James born at Tisbury in 1765 but I am
trying to track down R.W's birthplace.
Thank you

Hi Dennis,
It seems to me that this family could possibly have been religious
rebels. There is a family of James and Martha having children around
1770 ± in Tisbury in Wiltshire - about 25 miles from Midsomer Norton.
The
IGI notes that they are independent in a few of the baptisms. The
late
1700's when the industrial revolution was beginning and the enclosure act
took away the way of life for many country people, many people were
forced
to move away from traditional places. I would not discount any of
these
folks as not being related to the rest of the Midsomer Norton clan.
For example, there is another *independent* entry in my IGI database that
looks rather like your man and would be worth investigating - just coming
into the period of required registration (not that everyone took any
notice
to start with). Bath, Bristol and Midsomer are all in a 20 mile
range -
a day's walk, less with a horse, though if my memory serves me correctly
it's a bit hilly around there <grin>. It would seem that you will need
to look outside the established church records.

I have written to Phil Clements who seems to be the Midsomer expert, but
have not yet heard back from him. Will let you know if anything turns
up
that looks hopeful for a birth for Robert William, which is what you
asked
for in the first place. I have a similar problem with my AGG research at
the other end of Gloucestershire because so many counties touched within a
few miles.
