Dear Christine,
I did not intend to embarrass you by comments concerning any mis spelling of
the family name but naturally it is important to get the individuals
spelling correct as we know it. Indeed I have to say that I note you "have
done it again" by referring to John Cattley of Shabden as Catley of Shabden.
As I have already pointed out, the Tree that John Cattley of Shabden belongs
to, has been spelled Cattley since the mid 1600's and I think it important
that we continue to do so, otherwise confusion reins! Your comments re the
"muddling up" of the two spellings are quite correct in my opinion although
in my experience there are more instances of Catley families changing their
name to Cattley than vice-versa.
There is a good example of this of an emigration of Catleys from Leeds in
the 1860's to Pennsylvania USA where they suddenly became Cattleys!
The Ansty Catley Tree (Hertfordshire) contains even more outwardly confusing
evidence in the Parish records where both names have been used over some
four generations.
In answer to your last paragraph :- Barnet is in Hertfordshire and Barnetby
(full name Barnetby le Wold) is in Lincolnshire and their root names mean
slightly different things I think :- Barnet " a place cleared by burning"
whereas Barnetby is " Beornnoths village by the wood" thus no connection.
Best wishes Tim Cattley

Subject: [CAT...] name spelling and locations
Hi everybody
The link is getting very interesting.
When I was picked up on my mis-spelling of my Catleys I was very
embarassed
but I now believe that those looking for Catley ancestors must
consider
the
'double ts'. If I could make the mistake, surely that is what
they did.
As I have read earlier today, people start this hobby/lifestyle for many
reasons but mine was because I knew only 2 facts:
1.) My paternal grandmother's father was called Richard Catley and came
from
Barnetby.
2.) My paternal grandmother's mother insisted that her third name,
Herriott,
should always be quoted and she came from Boston.
As I have learnt about these two people and chart the movements of their
possible ancestors and their descendants I feel sure that they are linked
with Cattleys and Catlah of Hull, not only that Elizabeth Ann Herriott
Catley and Richard Catley are catalogued as Carley (of Grimsby) in the
1901
census.
Today as I learn about Catley of Shabden, being near Barnet, I wonder if
Barnet and Barnetby are linked in any way?
