Hi again Marge,
So what's the news concerning James Marshall and his sub-branch? Have you
both got it together yet?!
Ah ha! So there is evidence to indicate that Thomas Catley of Seacroft (are
you reading this Kay?) had a son registered as Amos Cattley. Most
interesting news indeed.
I have gone back to my origional UK (Kew) Registers in the light of your
information and what do I find under Cattley birth registrations for 1862?
Eight Cattleys born that year (note everybody, this is Cattley NOT Catley)
two of them are members of my (Stevan Catlay) Tree, two are Royston District
and thus Ansty Cat*leys, one is Gainsborough, Lincs another is Peterborough,
Cambs. One is Wakefield, Yorks. The missing 8th? Yes! Amos Cattley
registration district Hunslett (Leeds).
Armed with this gem of info I have checked out all the names of Amos'
brothers against their birth years and not one of them is recorded as
Cattley. The conclusion therefore is that for reasons unknown, Amos and only
Amos who emigrated to the USA founded the line that James Marshall Cattley
calls:- The Cattleys of Western Pennsylvania. Presumably an entry error
by the Registrar in Hunslett and poor literacy in the Catley household who
did not pick up on the spelling difference.
For the Registrar to make such an error (ie to add an extra T in Amos' name)
on the face of it, seems odd but then having just checked out some
information in the Leeds area relating to one of Kay Heaths recent e-mails,
it is obvious that the name was running concurrently in that area with both
spellings at that time. Maybe the Registrar had recently recorded a Cattley
event and on having to enter Amos' birth details simply added another T out
of habit.
Not sure that I can buy the idea that Thomas' name was the one mis spelt
BUT, having said that I note that there are entries under Cattley for births
in Pontefract, Yorkshire (Yorks) as follows:- Amos 1845
Esther 1846
Daniel 1847.
These would seem to fit with the name choices within your Tree.
I think that Kay (Heath) is on the case re Leeds Cat*leys and it will be
interesting to see what she comes up with. She has been looking around the
1820's- 1860's and may have some input soon.
Cheers ........... Tim.C.

Hi Tim,
Glad to see your well.
I have the copy of the birth of Amos Cattley born of Thomas
CAtley
Seacroft Have to find it to post it to you and Erica.
So that was England's change not US. HOWEVER, Louis told
me
that
when he went to England to find and copy it. They believed that the
name that was miss spelled was Thomas's. Curious thought isn't it.
That
would really put a monkey wrench into the works!!!! Far
fetched
maybe.......but not impossible!
Cheers, Marge
