Hi Erica:
The predominance of biblical names can clearly be seen in my family tree up
to 1830's when more popular names, usually associated with the
Sovereign/Royal family started to appear. This is only one particular branch
of my tree .
I can always remember when I asked my mother why none us had middle names
she replied that her family choices were merger and she wasn't going to call
any son of hers Elijah (my paternal grandfather) or Hugh (my maternal
grandfather)! How times change!
Interestingly we also have "Mercy" and " Charity" but oddly enough
no
"Hope"and no "Faith"?

Hi Liz,
I have been thinking about your Zacc. theory. It seems to me it might be
worth looking for a religious group that favoured the name. Might be
worth looking in Dr. William's library records.
As you may know Zacchaeus is a Biblical name from John 19 verses
1-10. Try Googling it to see the various interpretations.
Basically he as a small man, an unpopular man who collected taxes and yet
he was favoured by Jesus and he showed that even the seemingly unlovable
were not what they seem, or could be better than they had been, depending
on your take on the story - and this is no place for any religious debate.
There is obviously some reason why this commonly variously mis-spelt name
was popular at one, relatively, short time - about 80 years from 1770-1830,
along with a variety of names that quickly died out. It seems to be a
name associated with Pentacostalism these days, but who knows what it meant
to those who valued the name back then. Maybe just fashion just like all
those girls who were called Philadelphia around the same time.
Similarly, Zachariah is another biblical name from 2 Kings12: 29; 15:
8-12 but with a totally different context and, it might be said, one
which would not be especially desirable for a child, was also popular at
around the same time. But at first face the two names Zachariah and
Zacchaeus are not difficult to confuse.
From this one might deduce that these people, rather like the young of
today are looking for new names that stamp them as "free-thinkers" in some
way. It seems likely that the parents might have belonged to a
non-conformist religion fashionable at the time, which may explain why they
are so difficult to find.
Today the name Ethan is all the rage - also from the Bible - but most
people have no idea that is anything but a name from Hollywood. Even
Zachary is coming back into popularity - probably for a totally different
reason.
Just my tupenn'th ..... Erica
