Subject: [CAT...] Success! I have managed to turn my computer on!
Hi all, tis I FJC
I'm just settling in after the holiday and am delighted to report that,
after
months of trying, I have managed to open Tim's emails - together
with 248
others. However I am still unable to send mail from that program. The more
I
have to deal with computers, the more I think the quill has much to
be
said
for it.
I was in contact with David Meredith some years ago, in fact it was he
that
gave me the Family Origins program that I still use. He also gave me
the
basics for my tree THANKS AGAIN DAVID
I have read about the Catly / Cattley controversy and would like to add my
two
pennyworth. About 50 tears ago, when I was about 11, an elderly aunt
gave
me
an ivory covered prayer book, saying that it had belonged to one of
my
relatives. Inside the cover was handwritten "This book belongs to Mary(?)
Cattley". I have also seen birth, marriage and death certificates for the
same
person, two as Catley and one as Cattley. I have always assumed that
this
was
because of our ancestors not reading or writing. The Registrat /
vicar
writing
the names phoneticly. As an aside, in the company for which I work we
employ
many Pakistanis and Arabs and the same problem arrises. We have to
enter
personnel records as best we can. We hear the name but the empoyee can't
speak
English and his papers are written in Urdu or Arabic - so I see this
problem
every day.
As a matter of interest, Aunt Maud, who was a chain smoker, also gave me
an
ashtray (at 11 yers old!) saying that it too was connected with the
family. It
took me years to discover that it related to Catley Springwater,
from
St.Mary's Priory. It has an artists impression of the priory pronted on
it.
I have also read the emails concerning the similarity of family members in
old
photographs. I have photographs of my Great Great Grandfather, and my
son
(both Richards) taken at about the same age - you would think that they
were
brothers.
As you will probably gather, I am a computer cretin. If I ever find out
how to
send photographs I will send copies of the Richards and the ashtray.
But
don't
hold your breath!
Not that I can start to catch up on old emails I hope to be able to
provide
some input into the discussions. I have adden a number of names to my
tree
and
if anyone wants a copy I would be delighted to pass it on.
My 'bush' goes back to:
William Catley 1709
Catherine Barret 1723
Richards Ranns 1750
Faith Burton ?
God bless
John (FJC)
