I think it very unlikely that his mother would be mentioned. You might find
out what he stole and from whom and it might say of...... (a village), it
might give father's occupation and /or village.

Hello Celia,
thanks for your help.
I have the details of his conviction on a
ship's indent. He actually got ten years
for shoplifting.
Would the quarter session records have details concerning
his family? That would really make it worth while as I don't know
his mother's name (listed as 'unknown' on his death certificate).
His father's name is listed as Thomas also on the death certificate
but Thomas seems to have been a popular name.

I used to live in Bath, I think you mean Midsummer Norton don't
you? I
checked through a2a and the Bath and North East Somerset Record office
have
the quarter session records. The address is the Guildhall Bath, BA1
5AW,
or
e mail archives(a)bathnes.gov.uk if they won't look it up for you
they
might
be able to give you contact details of a local researcher. We got a
lot
of
detail of the crime when we did this, it was often stealing a
smallish
thing
like a duck or a bale of cloth!
Cheers Celia
