Liz,
I think you have to consider the potential problem when annotating the BMD
lists of overdocumentation, ie "complicating things by attempting to make it
easy for others to understand"!
Sure, your family Title of Zaccheaus of Newington, indicates that there is a
known Tree starting from that person but no more, but if you start worrying
about how interested parties are going to get to grips with/understand the
successive generations, you might just as well print out your whole Tree and
flag it up!
Far better I think would be to simply put a refrence number against ALL the
BMD entries relating to that Tree and against that researcher. If therefore
your tree members are all annotated with your personal number through the
generations it would be very easy to pick out your tree.
We have to consider new members who will probably visit this net armed with
a little information which may well not extend back more than maybe three
generations or so. If they then consult your BMD's and find a name match
which confirms their ancestor, they have an instant reference by the
associated number as to who is the genealogical research contact member for
that specific Tree.
In the event of more than one of our members laying claim to the same
individual on the BMD Register:- this instantly indicates that something is
amiss because this should not be! If both parties can legitimatly prove
that the person concerned "is of their Tree" then the two Trees are one!
I would have thought that the two best persons to ask for their thoughts on
this overall subject are Chris Newall and Erica.

HI Kay,
Very good point, well I could put 2 or even 3 names by the side of an
entry
that's not a problem. I think I will be able to coloured code
certs from
people who know most about a branch.
I know we have the titles of our families ie mine is Zaccheaus of
Newington
but it doesn't really tell you who all the children are etc. I do
know
that
other people are looking at Lambeth, Camberwell etc the same as me
and
that
it can get very expensive ordering certs. I just thought it would be
easier.
Then maybe we could put our heads together and think of a coding
system.
Keep your input coming. Anybody else want to join in.

Only problem possibly is
what do we do if one or more people 'claim' somebody.... should we
put the name of the person who has the original certificate?? Or the
person who knows most about that branch?? or maybe you could
put two names??
(This is why I was hoping we could come up with some sort of coding
system for the major lines...)

Hi Kay,
Yes that's the idea. Then anytime anybody wants to know anything about a
particular person just ask away.
Question is do you think it will work.

Ok, so you have taken the Catleys from the free BMD and THEN also added
the
ones from the 1837 site which are not on free BMD. So the list on
the
Catley
page consists of both...
yes, excellent..we give you the details of the ones we know are ours, and
you add our name, and then we can contact the name if we think we might
have
a cross over..terrific..what a good job you have done...
So you will need info from us like this??:-
Name Quarter Year
Area
Ernest Catley December 1886
Lambeth
LIZC
????

Hi Kay,
I do sound confusing half the time!! I think its because I have given up
smoking and my brain is working faster than I'm typing!!
What I have done is print off the Catley BMD from Freebmd and I am also
adding to my list the ones that are missing to give to Chris for his site,
this will help new people until freebmd have transcribed all. Then I am
putting peoples names by the bmd so we will all have a record of who has
proved that the record belongs to them. Then we can look at the list and
see who is left over and see if we can then relate to that person. This
saves people ordering a cert unnecessary.
For example
Ernest Catley married Dec Q 1886 Lambeth 1d 822 well he is mine and I have
the cert. If other people are looking for relatives in Lambeth I can then
tell them who this person is and the other details saving them £7. plus.
Hope this is not to long winded
Liz
