Thank-you David, Celia and Tim for your replies.
I appreciate your input.
The only proof I have for Thomas' birthplace is his death
certificate. It lists Bath as where he was born. He died in the
Hospital For Insane, Parramatta, so perhaps there is a chance
that his birthplace is incorrect, who knows?
His age at death is listed as 82 and he died in august, 1901, so
that gives a birthdate of 1819, or 1818 if he was to turn 83 later in
the year he died.
The records regarding his conviction state that he was tried in the Bath
Quarter Session on October, 1837, at age 19. This also gives a birth date
of 1818 or 1817 if he was to turn 20 later that year. Perhaps 1818 is going
to be the best date.
I also wonder if the boundaries have changed much? Bath is a city, isn't it?
Did it used be a county or shire name that may have encompassed Midsomer
Norton back when Thomas was born? (probably not, just hoping for a lead...)
Thanks again for your help,
Anthony

Anthony is obviously at a loss as to where to go now as those of you
who
have been monitoring this site will recall, he wrote in earlier in the
year
indicating that he knew that his Thomas Catley was tried at Bath
Assises
and
then Transported to Australia in 1839.
At that time he thought that he was born in 1818.
His recent contact suggests that he has made some progress in that he now
indicates that Thomas was born in Bath in 1819.
Anthony:- are you now saying that you have positive proof that Thomas
lived in Bath when apprehended for whatever crime he was Transported for?
None of us have yet picked up on any Catleys who actually resided in Bath
and as such, there are no persons in that City who would know about him.
As
the replies at the time of your original e-mail indicate, it is much
more
likely that he was a member of what was then quite a big family of Catleys
based in and around the then village of Somerset Norton.
It is quite possible therefore that your Thomas could have been
apprehended
for a local felony or whatever and sent to Bath for trial. So unless
you
have proof positive that he was a resident of Bath at the time, my
suggestion is that you team up with those Listers such as Glynis Brown and
Dennis and Marg Catley who are specifically researching the Midsomer
Norton
Catleys.
Sorry I can not be more helpful and I know how frustrating it is not to be
able to get a good start on such research but at this time, it does really
look as if Somerset Norton is the most likely place as to where to start
your searches.
Does anybody have anything that will assist Anthony to get a toe hold on
his
Thomas Catley?
REgards .......... Tim
