OK Anthony,
Thanks for the collective reply.
I note that in Chris Newalls census returns lists that there is a Thomas
Catley listed as having married Janet Anderson in NSW in 1846 and that for
1847 there is a birth of an Eleanor.J.Catley daughter of Thomas, NSW. Could
this refer to "your Thomas"? The information was supplied by JACKB.
If this information fits, do you know of JackB?
Sorry that we have not been of much help regarding Catleys living in Bath
but there are few references that I know of..
I confess to not knowing the history of the boundary line between the
Counties of Wiltshire, Somerset and Gloucestershire but for some time now,
Bath has been in the NE tip of Somerset and I think has always been within
the County. The same would apply to the then village of Somerset Norton
which is some 8-10 miles to the SW and thus deeper into Somerset.
If you look at Chris Newalls census lists you will see references to persons
in Bristol but they are few and far between and in any case although both
Bristol and Bath are and were Cities, Bristol was then in Gloucestershire.
Thus I can not believe that Bristol Catleys have anything to do with Thomas
and I still put my money on Thomas being probably one of the Somerset Norton
Catley clan who may indeed have moved into Bath and thus been a resident of
that City when accused of whatever crime he was accused of.
You have received a suggestion re Taunton Records and I think this is well
worth exploring.
Regards ............ Tim.

Thank-you David, Celia and Tim for your replies.
I appreciate your input.
The only proof I have for Thomas' birthplace is his death
certificate. It lists Bath as where he was born. He died in the
Hospital For Insane, Parramatta, so perhaps there is a chance
that his birthplace is incorrect, who knows?
His age at death is listed as 82 and he died in august, 1901, so
that gives a birthdate of 1819, or 1818 if he was to turn 83 later in
the year he died.
The records regarding his conviction state that he was tried in the Bath
Quarter Session on October, 1837, at age 19. This also gives a birth date
of 1818 or 1817 if he was to turn 20 later that year. Perhaps 1818 is
going
to be the best date.
I also wonder if the boundaries have changed much? Bath is a city, isn't
it?
Did it used be a county or shire name that may have encompassed
Midsomer
Norton back when Thomas was born? (probably not, just hoping for a
lead...)
Thanks again for your help,
Anthony
