Howdy Mick,
In this case, that which you write is anything but trivia and you have just
made me very happy because you have managed to confirm something for me:-
The J.Cattley that you quote:- a London based wool merchant and Russia (not
Russian!) merchant
is an ancestor on my family tree ..... he has to be James Richard Cattley
1806-1867 who was a merchant in Russian Trade based in St Petersburg, Russia
and Ealing, London.
Can you confirm that you got your information ex "The Blackheath Connection"
by Dan Byrnes?
Regards Tim PS nodoubt our NZ clan will be
interested in this

G'day Tim,
Just to continue the trivia thread a little longer. I understand that
Cattley Street in Burnie, Tasmania is named after Mr J. Cattley a London
based wool merchant and Russian merchant who was a director of the Van
Diemen's Land Company, established in 1824 to start a wool industry to
supply the British woolen mills. The company was given royal permission
to
select 250 000 acres of land in unexplored north west Van
Diemen's Land
(Tasmania). The project failed and the directors lost most of their money.
