Dear Chris,
I was interested to see your web page about the many Catleys you have. I
have an Alce (Alice) Catley born circa 1785 in Leeds who marries Samuel
Robinson in July 1806 in Garforth, which is a small village just outside
of Leeds. If you come across any information regarding her, I'd love to
hear from you. Cheers.
Regards,
Liz (Moran)

Hi Everyone
Can anyone tell me to which families Ann Catley (1745-1789) or Gwen
Catley (1906-1996) belonged? All I know about them is that they were
both famous sopranos and that Ann Catley married Francis Lascelles in
about 1765. I've managed to find information on Gwen Catley's career,
but have no idea where either of them link into the Tree, and I'm very
interested in them!
Can anyone help please? Thanks!
Sharon
I have done some research into Anne Catley, partly because she might
just be collaterally linked into my tree but mainly because she is an
interesting person in her own right.
Although she and Francis Lascelles lived together as man and wife and he
appears to have been the acknowledged father of 10 of her children I
have found no record of their alleged marriage. Furthermore there are
several reasons for doubting whether the marriage ever took place:
1) Anne's will describes Francis Lascelles as the father of her named
children but never refers to him as her husband, she always names him as
'Major General Francis Lascelles'.
2) The affidavit attached to Anne's will describes her as 'late of the
said parish of Ealing spinster deceased'.
3) Anne left all her property to her children. Before the Married
Women's Property Act of 1882 married women could not own property and
could only make valid wills with the approval of their husband. However,
Francis Lascelles was her executor, so might have been considered to
have given his consent.
Anne's parents have not been traced as far as I am aware, but her father
was coachman to Robert Barclay, a Quaker merchant. She had a sister
named Mary and two nephews Robert and William Fox [referred to in the
Codicil to Anne's will] The latter were presumably the sons of Jane
Catley and James Fox, whose marriage allegation, dated 11th June 1765,
stated that they were to be married at St George, Bloomsbury. This
marriage has not been found, but it may be supposed that Jane was
another of Anne's sisters.
There is a short biography of Anne Catley on my website [URL below],
follow the Biographies link on the Family History page.
